Job description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and certified Welder to join our FP&M Physical Plant team at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. The ideal candidate will perform welding tasks to maintain and repair university infrastructure, including steel structures, custom fabrication, and stainless-steel and aluminum components. This role involves both shop-based work and mobile welding tasks across campus, collaborating with various campus partners, including research departments, transportation services, and campus services.

Responsibilities:
  • Performs complex welding work on structural and critical members, designing, constructing, and repairing ornamental iron work, iron gratings, railings, heavy door hinges, and other iron parts, ensuring safety and operability of facilities.
  • Interprets blueprints and drawings to assess specifications, verify requirements, and discuss project plans with clients.
  • Gathers materials, prepares work areas, and maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Performs skilled welding according to trade standards and safety codes.
  • Reviews finished projects with clients and maintains work records and reports.
  • Cleans work areas after project completion.
  • Supports research projects by fabricating and repairing specialized equipment and structures.
  • Participates in sustainability initiatives, including maintaining recycling stations, bike racks, and eco-friendly infrastructure.

Education:

Preferred: High School Diploma and completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Welder. For details, visit: DWD Apprenticeship Program.

Holders of a registration with the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services must have passed relevant welding tests within the past year, according to AWS standards.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • AWS D1.1 Certification
  • Completion of a certified apprenticeship or similar credential program
  • Minimum 3 years of welding experience
  • Proficiency in TIG, MIG, GTAW, Shielded Arc Welding, brazing, soldering, and plasma cutting
  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of tools

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of welding safety protocols
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • D1.3 and D1.6 Certification
  • Forklift Operator Certification
Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Full Time (100%)

Position requires onsite work at designated campus locations.

Salary:

Minimum $51.65/hour, depending on qualifications. Vacation options vary with vacation hours purchased. Benefits include paid holidays, sick leave, health/dental/vision insurance, and retirement plans.
