Job summary

The Comox Valley Regional District is seeking a full-time Waste Management Attendant for the CVWMC in Cumberland, starting September 2026. You will operate the landfill scale, collect tipping fees, and ensure loads comply with regulations while delivering friendly customer service.

The role requires cash handling experience, a valid Class 5 BC license, and OFA Level 1. It supports a seven-day operation with a Monday–Thursday schedule and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Greet the public at the landfill and explain regulations and processes.
• Operate the weigh scale, input data, calculate tipping fees, collect fees and issue receipts.
• Balance receipts and cash at end of day, prepare sales summary and bank deposit.
• Direct the public to disposal locations and screen loads for prohibited materials.
• Monitor recycling and refuse bins and arrange for emptying as required.
• Perform routine maintenance and housekeeping of facilities and surrounding area.

We are accepting applications from Comox Valley Regional District CUPE Local 556 members only for a full-time Waste Management Attendant to join our Engineering Services team starting in September 2026. The Waste Management Attendant operates the landfill scale, collects tipping fees, communicates on waste diversion initiatives and inspects residential user’s loads to ensure incoming waste is properly screened for prohibited and restrictive materials. Situated at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre (CVWMC) in Cumberland, and reporting to the Supervisor - CVWMC, the primary responsibilities of this role include:

• Greeting the general public wishing to deposit refuse and providing information regarding landfill regulations, policies and processes;
• Operating the weight scale, entering customer data into the database, determining tipping fees based on weight, collecting fees, issuing receipts, and providing correct change;
• Balancing receipts and cash at the end of the work day, preparing a sales summary and bank deposit in accordance with accounting procedures;
• Directing the public to the appropriate disposal locations and visually screening the incoming waste to ensure prohibited and restrictive materials do not enter the general waste stream;
• Monitoring recycling and refuse bins and arranging to have them emptied as required;
• Performing routine maintenance and housekeeping of the facilities, scale and surrounding area.

• Experienced in cash handling in a computerized environment and customer service with over six months up to one year of directly related experience along with high school graduation, a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and Occupational First Aid (Level 1);
• Detail oriented, with the ability to process and reconcile payments;
• Knowledgeable in standard practices, procedures, policies, bylaws, codes, regulations, methods and equipment related to the landfill;
• Flexible when it comes to hours of work to effectively support a seven day per week operation including working weekends;
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.

***The work schedule for this position will be Monday to Thursday; however, may be subject to change based on operational needs.***
