Job summary

Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a Switchboard Operator/Receptionist to handle calls across hospital lines, direct visitors, and assist with travel arrangements. The position requires flexibility due to 24/7 operations, with casual relief shifts and no guaranteed hours.

Minimum education is Grade XII; prior health-care or emergency exposure is an asset, along with strong communications and basic computer skills. French language skills are a plus.

Qualifications

• Grade XII or equivalent education required.
• Previous health care/emergency or related experience is an asset.
• Knowledge in operation of telecommunications equipment and basic computer skills.
• Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to respond to, follow and interpret emergency procedures.
• Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.
• A skills test may be included as part of the selection process.

Responsibilities

• Receive and transfer all calls to patient rooms, hospital administration/operational lines and internal calls.
• Direct and assist the public at reception areas and guide to destinations.
• Direct building exit procedures in case of fire or evacuation.
• Provide internal operational services such as pager issuance and information dissemination.
• Assist patients and the public with local travel arrangements.
