Job summary

Freeman Herbs is seeking a Vegetable & Ornamental Grower to manage greenhouse growing operations, overseeing long-term ornamental production as well as seasonal vegetables and herbs.

You will supervise crop quality, pest management, and daily activities within CFIA guidelines, coordinating with multiple teams and ensuring optimal growing conditions.

Qualifications

• Highschool diploma or equivalent required.
• Horticulture diploma or degree preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of leadership experience in a greenhouse/horticultural setting.
• Ability to work autonomously and coordinate multiple teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide plants with proper nutrients and water.
• Monitor greenhouse environment and adjust as needed.
• Track crop quality, waste, and opportunities for improvement.
• Monitor for pests and disease and implement controls.
• Assist with spraying and the IPM program.
• Maintain records of crops, shrink, and spray activities.
• Coordinate daily activities with the growing team and stakeholders.
• Work within CFIA regulations and safety guidelines.

Job description

As Vegetable & Ornamental Grower, you will play a vital role in managing, organizing, directing and controlling the activities of greenhouse growing. Your crop responsibilities will account for long-term ornamental production, as well as seasonal vegetable and herb offerings. You will work with the growing department to assess crop quality and ensure healthy and pest free ornamentals, vegetables, and herbs. You will implement preventative measures to ensure plants are pest and disease free and have optimal conditions to thrive and grow.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensure plants are provided with proper nutrients and water
• Monitor the greenhouse environment, making adjustments as needed
• Monitor crop quality and waste to determine opportunities for improvement
• Monitor for pests and disease
• Assist with spraying and the I.P.M. Program
• Maintain records of crop, shrink reports and spray records
• Maintain daily communication with the department to coordinate daily activities and to ensure continuous improvement
• Identify systemic problems and suggest solutions for remediation
• Work within the parameters of CFIA regulations
• Attendance of weekly meetings with growing team
• Work within safety guidelines established by Freeman Herbs and identify areas of safety concern
• Keep a clean and tidy work environment

Qualifications:

Education:

• Highschool diploma
• Horticulture diploma or degree required

Experience:

• Minimum 2 years of demonstrated leadership experience in a greenhouse/horticultural setting

Skills:

• Working knowledge of greenhouse management systems
• Self-motivated, demonstrated leadership skills'
• Ability to work autonomously with little guidance
• Ability to coordinate amongst multiple teams and stakeholders
• Willing to be on call, work weekends when needed
• Working knowledge of Microsoft suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
• Valid spray/pesticide license
• Working knowledge of Spanish is considered an asset
