The Utilities Accountant is responsible for setting up utility accounts, monitoring utility usage, and ensuring timely payments to avoid service disruptions. Additionally, you will maintain accurate utilities-related data and play a key role in the recording, financial analysis, and reporting of utility expenses. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders will be crucial to your success in this position.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Prepare and maintain accurate records for all utility payable transactions, ensuring timely and correct processing of payments.
  • Generate and post monthly journal entries related to utilities, ensuring all utility expenses are captured accurately in the financial records.
  • Coordinate the setup of utility accounts with service providers, ensuring that all accounts are established in a timely manner and that all relevant information is accurately recorded.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for utility providers, taking proactive measures to minimize the risk of service disconnections. This includes ensuring timely bill payments, resolving billing issues, and managing communications to promptly address any concerns.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations for utility expense accounts, ensuring that all transactions are accurate, complete, and aligned with financial records.
  • Prepare and analyze utilities accruals, ensuring proper recognition of utility expenses in the financial statements. Ensure that all expense allocations are timely and accurately recorded.
  • Analyze utility expenses for each property, identifying any anomalies or discrepancies. This may involve reviewing utility usage patterns, historical trends, and consulting with utility vendors as necessary.
  • Maintain and manage comprehensive utilities-related data, ensuring all relevant information is captured and stored accurately for reporting purposes. This includes utility usage, billing data, and any other pertinent information necessary for reporting and analysis.
  • Develop, document, and maintain accounting procedures related to utility expense management and accounts payable. Assist with audits and provide accurate and timely data when requested.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for automating or streamlining utility-related accounting processes.
  • Oversee the month-end accounting cycle for utility expenses, ensuring all related reports, transactions, and reconciliations are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work closely with various internal teams, as well as external stakeholders, such as utility providers and auditors, to ensure effective utility management and financial reporting.
  • We are a flexible and proactive team, readily taking on additional responsibilities as business needs evolve.


WHAT WILL YOU NEED?

  • Possession of an accounting diploma or accounting degree is a strong asset.
  • 3+ years general accounting experience, prior experience in property accounting will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work with large volume of daily transactions and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to be a self-starter, work independently, excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, experience with Yardi Voyager would be considered an asset.
