Job summary

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) Alberta is hiring in Calgary/Edmonton for a role supporting underwriting and policy processing. You will handle new and renewal applications, calculate premiums, and ensure accurate discounts and charges while maintaining service levels.

The position offers hybrid work arrangements and collaboration with brokers. You will review risk, obtain necessary information, and help assign and escalate cases per underwriting guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary certificate in a relevant field (insurance/risk management).
  • Knowledge of underwriting procedures and insurance principles.
  • Proficient use of MS Word and Excel; office procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Process new/renewal applications, revisions, cancellations and quotes.
  • Calculate premiums and apply discounts and surcharges.
  • Review and evaluate routine risks and renewals for insurability.
  • Explain underwriting criteria to brokers and maintain broker relationships.

Job description

General Accountability

The successful candidate is responsible for processing insurance policies; reviewing, evaluating and determining insurability for routine renewal insurance applications; and providing administrative support to the underwriting team.

Key Accountabilities

Note: This section is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities - other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

Policy Processing

Processes new/renewal applications, revisions, cancellations and quotes with a mix of processing simple new business and servicing existing policies.

Calculates premiums, ensuring that appropriate rates are used and that applicable discounts and surcharges are applied.

Ensures that product and customer service levels are maintained.

Insurance Underwriting

Reviews and evaluates routine renewal applications and/or revisions to confirm the nature and degree of risk involved.

Acquires further information on applications (and the risks involved) when necessary.

Determines whether to accept, modify or escalate risks.

Places business within the rules and restrictions of subscription, reinsurance and legislative guidelines.

Broker Relationships

Explains underwriting criteria and decisions to brokers (verbally and/or in writing).

Develops and maintains working relationships with brokers to generate a flow of profitable business and provide assistance in resolving any service matters.

Promotes and sells supporting products to brokers.

Negotiates conditions, premiums and limitations for routine renewal policies to balance business needs and underwriting guidelines in limited situations (in applicable positions only).

Administrative Support

Reviews and dispatches underwriting submissions.

Maintains filing systems.

Provides administrative support to the underwriting team.

Leadership

Actively contributes to and supports a culture of a high performing workforce.

Participates in divisional succession plans, ensuring ongoing professional and career development and supports development in others.

Supports a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies.

Is actively committed to leadership development across the company, supporting team and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities.

Corporate Management

Enables the success of programs and policies that are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.

Manages risk in area of authority.

Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility.

Education and Experience

A one-year certificate from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such Business and specializing in insurance and risk management 1 - 2 years’ directly related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of office procedures and office equipment.

Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Word and Excel.

Knowledge of underwriting procedures.

Knowledge of the principles and practice of insurance.

Pay and Employment

Pay Range: $55,371 - $69,175

Out of Scope Permanent, Full-Time

Location: Calgary or Edmonton - This role is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, providing flexibility to work both on-site in either Calgary or Edmonton and remotely from home on a scheduled rotation. The successful candidate will be expected to work on-site full-time until they are fully trained and comfortable in the role.
