Job summary

WoodGreen is hiring a Tutor to support students in the Homeward Bound Program. The role involves in-person tutoring for grades 1–8, twice weekly for one hour per student, with progress reports and parent meetings, located at 1430 Gerrard Street East, Toronto.

The incumbent will deliver individualized and small-group instruction, maintain records, and collaborate with staff to ensure academic growth and attendance, while engaging families and supporting schoolwork.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Education or a related field.
  • OCT qualified is considered a strong asset.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience teaching or tutoring students in primary or secondary school.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working with young people who experience difficulty in attending school consistently and achieving academic success.
  • Experience teaching students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and an understanding of how they are developed and how to integrate them in your teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small group tutoring for students in grades 1 to 8 (assessments, lesson plans, progress reports). Virtually and in-person.
  • Complete Intake forms and initial assessments for new tutees to identify and develop academic goals and appropriate support strategies.
  • Support assigned tutees in achieving their individualized learning goals and track progress regularly.
  • Attend bi-weekly team meetings to review student progress, share updates and coordinate use of different strategies with the team.
  • Assist the Supervisor with coordination, planning and delivery of tutoring events - for example: tutoring graduation, workshops etc.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate documentation of attendance, student progress, sessions, goals, feedback and report cards, as required by the program.
  • Collaborate with Case Counsellors, other program staff (A4), teachers to ensure consistent and supportive learning environment.
  • Support children with their current schoolwork and assignments, as needed.
  • Establish a learning environment through creative and innovative techniques that motivate students and ensure consistent attendance.
  • Incorporate an interactive model of learning where students are engaged in their learning.
  • Implement instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
  • Facilitate learning as a guide and coach to assist the student to become a successful, independent learner.
  • Incorporate effective study and learning strategies to maximize academic success (organization skills, time management, study habits).
  • Maintain ongoing contact with the parents regarding their child’s progress.

Program Overview – Tutor, Homeward Bound Program

The incumbent of this position is responsible for facilitating students’ learning and understanding of a particular subject, helping them develop the necessary skills and confidence to succeed academically and independently. The incumbent is responsible for facilitating learning of students within the Homeward Bound Program.

The incumbent will support children in working on their Reading, Literacy, and Math skills. The tutor will work with each student twice a week for one hour. The tutor will also maintain records of students’ work and create report card comments, meet with parents to discuss progress, and ensure overall academic growth of each student.
