Job Description

Position Purpose

This role involves serving customers, sorting incoming products, and supporting ongoing retail operations at The Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Responsibilities

• Greet and interact courteously with customers and donors.
• Help meet sales targets through excellent customer service.
• Know product pricing and sale items; ensure donated items' integrity.
• Handle store opening and closing procedures.
• Accurately process transactions, including cash and debit sales.
• Follow store policies on payments, refunds, and holds.
• Process donations: loading, unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, storing.
• Respond to customer inquiries with product knowledge.
• Monitor store security and activity.
• Assist with store layout, displays, and tidiness.
• Manage inventory: retrieving, sorting, pricing, replenishing, and removing items.
• Handle donations safely and organize merchandise.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Health & Safety

• Maintain a safe environment: snow removal, clear exits, clean spills.
• Keep the store organized, clean, and safe.
• Comply with OH&S regulations and store policies.

Relationships

Internal: Store Manager, officers, volunteers, staff; External: guests, vendors.

Supervision

Reports to: Lynn Ferguson, Thrift Store Manager. No direct reports.

Material & Financial Management

Moderate responsibilities; maintain assets per guidelines; no financial transactions or budgets.

Working Conditions

• Part-time, permanent position.
• Varied weekly schedule, including weekdays and Saturdays.
• Stand for long periods; lift/move up to 40 pounds; handle donations of various sizes.

Requirements

• Support and understand The Salvation Army's mission.
• Comply with health and safety policies.
• High school coursework or equivalent; experience may substitute.
• Experience in customer service, cash handling, and working with goods.
• Knowledge of lifting guidelines; familiarity with cash registers and computer systems.

Skills & Capabilities

• Attention to detail, self-motivated, team player.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Physically capable of lifting 40 pounds regularly.

Compensation & Hours

Wage: $15.95/hour

Hours: 35/week for 8 weeks, Monday-Saturday, 10:00-5:30

Eligibility

Applicants must be aged 15-30, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugee claimants under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. International students are ineligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are citizens or permanent residents.
