Job summary

Huu-ay-aht First Nations invites applications for a Project Coordinator to lead the Tribunal Process Review Project in Port Alberni, BC. You will manage day-to-day operations, research, interviews, data analysis, and community engagement, reporting to the Tribunal Project Lead and Deputy Law Clerk.

The position runs for two years from September 1, 2026, with possible extension and a salary range of CAD 70,000–80,000. Remote work is possible with some travel and occasional overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • Degree or certificate from a recognized university in Indigenous Law, Indigenous Governance, Public Administration, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training, traditional knowledge, and experience.
  • Formal training in trauma-informed communication techniques.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of direct experience working in an Indigenous environment, community, or government administration.
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience in qualitative data collection, research methodologies, and analytical techniques.
  • Proven background in drafting policy documents, briefing notes, operational agreements, and formal reports.
  • Experience participating in or coordinating working groups, committees, or consultative boards in cross‑cultural settings.
  • Must be a current resident of British Columbia.
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver's License, with willingness to travel between the Anacla (Bamfield) and Port Alberni offices using a company vehicle.
  • Willingness to work overtime, including occasional evenings and weekends, and complete required overnight travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Strategically analyze, evaluate, and manage complex initiatives while providing timely strategic advice and operational support to the Project Lead.
  • Prioritize, multitask, and organize working groups, committee meetings, and project logistics involving multiple internal and external participants.
  • Interact and work cooperatively with community members, government bodies, and organizational partners to integrate their knowledge and data into the project.
  • Use logic, sound judgment, and data to evaluate options and develop actionable solutions that meet project objectives.
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, to multiple levels of government, community gatherings, and committees.
  • Provide financial and administrative support to the Project Lead, ensuring timely submission of expenses within the overall project budget.
  • Administer the established project Advisory Circle, including preparing minutes, distributing materials, managing invitations, and booking meeting venues.
  • Conduct Traditional Knowledge interviews as well as tribunal-related individual and group interviews using trauma-informed methodologies.
  • Analyze interview data and legal documents, compile research records, and enforce strict confidentiality and information protection standards.
  • Support the Project Lead on all community engagement sessions, stakeholder updates, and funder reporting requirements.
  • Develop multi-format educational and communication materials, including infographics, presentations, briefing notes, and formal reports.
  • Supervise summer interns and co‑op students as required throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify strategic opportunities for collaboration through ongoing networking and relationship building.

In accordance with the final employment agreement, employment status, and applicable HFN policy or plan terms

FUNCTION AND JOB SUMMARY

The Project Coordinator is the operational lead for the day-to-day management, research, guidance, support, logistics and advice on the Huu-ay-aht Tribunal Process Review Project (details can be found here: https://huuayaht.org/huu-ay-aht-first-nations-tribunal-project/). The position will serve as the main contact for researching, conducting trauma-informed confidential interviews, analyzing data, organizing workshops and meetings, leading community engagement sessions, and providing reports for the Tribunal Process Review project funded by the Law Foundation of BC.

  • Advanced conflict resolution, diplomacy, and consensus‑building skills to navigate diverse viewpoints and sensitive situations.
