Responsibilities

  • Lead the execution of complex, multidisciplinary high-voltage transmission and substation construction projects.
  • Manage projects through construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Coordinate internal project teams, engineering groups, consultants, contractors, vendors, and external stakeholders.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, risks, and contractor performance.
  • Develop, monitor, and maintain project schedules, forecasts, and recovery plans.
  • Manage project budgets, cost forecasts, change requests, and approval processes.
  • Participate in procurement activities including RFP development, tendering, bid evaluations, contract negotiations, and contract administration.
  • Support contract administration and develop execution strategies for safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery.
  • Identify risks and opportunities and implement mitigation plans.
  • Ensure compliance with safety requirements and HSE policies; participate in field activities and inspections.
  • Maintain project records, reporting, and governance documentation; report to program leadership.

Job description

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking two Project Managers on behalf of our client for a 1-year contract supporting the delivery of a major high-voltage transmission infrastructure program in Edmonton.

The successful candidates will take ownership of complex, multidisciplinary projects through construction, commissioning, and closeout, with responsibility for safety, schedule, cost, quality, contractor performance, procurement, and stakeholder coordination. The program includes the construction of a new substation, upgrades to two existing substations, construction of new 240 kV and 72 kV transmission lines, and the salvage and removal of existing transmission infrastructure.

This role is best suited for an experienced Project Manager with a strong background delivering utility construction, transmission, substation, or major infrastructure projects, particularly during the construction phase.

  • Location: Edmonton, AB (Hybrid – office based at the client's Edmonton service centre)
  • Job Type: 1-Year Contract
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; no overtime

Responsibilities
  • Lead the execution of complex, multidisciplinary high-voltage transmission and substation construction projects.
  • Manage projects through construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Coordinate internal project teams, engineering groups, consultants, contractors, vendors, and external stakeholders.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, risks, and contractor performance.
  • Develop, monitor, and maintain project schedules, forecasts, and recovery plans.
  • Manage project budgets, cost forecasts, change requests, and associated approval processes.
  • Participate in procurement activities, including RFP development, tendering, bid evaluations, contract negotiations, and contract award recommendations.
  • Support contract administration throughout project execution.
  • Develop project execution strategies that support safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery.
  • Identify project risks and opportunities and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure project hazards are identified and appropriate safe work plans and controls are implemented.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements and project HSE policies and procedures.
  • Participate in field activities, including construction kick-offs, project walk-downs, and HSE inspections.
  • Maintain accurate project records, reporting, and governance documentation.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with contractors, consultants, municipalities, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide regular project updates and reporting to program leadership.
Qualifications - Must-Haves
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or a relevant technical certificate or diploma combined with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience within a utility construction environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large, complex projects through the construction phase.
  • Experience with utility construction in energized substations, including knowledge of associated hazards and safe work practices.
  • Experience managing project scope, schedule, cost, quality, risk, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Experience with project permitting, environmental assessments, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong understanding of project management processes and procedures aligned with the PMBOK.
  • Experience with major equipment and construction services procurement, including RFP development, tendering, bid evaluations, contract negotiations, and contract administration.
  • Strong contractor and multidisciplinary stakeholder management experience.
  • Comfortable participating in construction field activities and working within established HSE requirements.
Nice-to-Haves
  • Direct experience managing high-voltage transmission and substation construction projects.
  • Experience with 240 kV and/or 72 kV transmission infrastructure.
  • Experience delivering major electrical utility or transmission infrastructure programs.
  • PMP designation.
  • Experience with the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) project lifecycle.
  • Experience with Oracle Projects, IVARA Work Management, eScheduler, SharePoint, or ProjectWise.
  • Construction Safety Training System (CSTS), Electrical Safety Training System, WHMIS, or related construction safety training.
  • Ground Disturbance 201, Alberta OHS Legislation Awareness, or Leadership for Safety Excellence training.
