Job summary

Job description

The Edmonton Police Service has an opportunity for one (1) Forensic Sciences Instructional and Curriculum Designer in Forensic Service Branch. The primary purpose of this position is to lead the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of forensic training programs in collaboration with members of the Crime Scene Investigation Section. This role applies evidence-based adult learning principles and instructional design best practices to develop training that is educationally sound, scientifically accurate, and aligned with operational needs and organizational objectives to assume the following responsibilities.

• Lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of forensic training programs using evidence-based adult learning and instructional design principles.
• Develop and maintain curriculum frameworks, including learning objectives.
• Instructional strategies, lesson plans, and course standards that align with operational requirements and scientific best practices.
• Conduct needs assessments and reviews of existing training programs to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities for enhancement.
• Integrate current forensic research, emerging technologies, and interdisciplinary practices into training design to ensure content remains current, relevant, and defensible.
• Establish and maintain quality assurance processes for curriculum, including alignment to training standards, consistency across courses, and sustainability of materials over time.
• Develop and maintain supporting training materials (e.g., manuals, facilitator guides, presentations, practical exercises) to support structured and standardized delivery.
• Provide expert guidance and coaching to forensic subject matter experts and instructors on curriculum design, instructional techniques, and effective adult learning practices.
• Collaborate with SMEs to translate complex forensic concepts into structured, accessible, and effective learning experiences.
• Conduct ongoing research related to forensic science, training methodologies, and adult education to inform program design and improvement.
• Monitor advancements in forensic technologies, scientific practices, and learning strategies to ensure training remains current and forward-looking.
• Apply evidence-based learning and evaluation practices to enhance program effectiveness and learner outcomes.
• Support the delivery of forensic training programs, including classroom and practical instruction, as required to reinforce curriculum design and instructional effectiveness.
• Pilot new or revised curriculum and instructional approaches to validate effectiveness and inform improvements.
• Design and maintain evaluation frameworks, tools, and assessment methods to measure learner performance and program effectiveness.
• Develop and update written examinations, practical evaluations, and proficiency assessments aligned with learning objectives and standards.
• Analyze evaluation results and learner feedback to identify trends and inform program improvements.
• Other related duties.

Qualifications

• A post-secondary degree in Education, Adult Learning, Instructional Design, or a related discipline (e.g., Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Forensic Science) is a requirement.
• Minimum two years of experience in a combination of adult education, curriculum development, instructional design, training program development or forensic science is a requirement.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, practical, and engaging learning experiences.
• Demonstrated ability to synthesize and communicate research, technical information, and operational practices in a clear, accurate, and learner-focused manner.
• Strong facilitation and presentation skills, including the ability to engage adult learners and adapt instructional approaches to support different learning needs.
• Curriculum Design and Instructional certification an asset.
• Effective Presentations certification an asset.
• Policy and Procedure Writing certification an asset.
• Software Program certification an asset.
• Driver’s license as an asset.
• Experience or training related to forensic science principles, crime scene investigation, or forensic identification as an asset.
• Relevant forensic certifications (e.g., forensic identification, latent print analysis, crime scene analysis, or similar disciplines) an asset.
• Must be able to work independently and in collaboration with others and as part of a team.
• Strong ability to provide guidance and advice to subject matter experts to prevent conflicting training goals.

Hours of Work

40 hours a week, 8 hours per day, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of variable hours of work program.

Salary Range

21B, Grade 021: $39.16 - $49.22 (Hourly); $3,132.80 - $3,937.70 (Bi-Weekly); $81,766.08 – 102,773.45 (Annually). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
