Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

This is a fixed term position of 36 months

The shift pattern for this position is Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm

Applications are invited from candidates with a First or Upper Second Class BSc Honours Degree in Genetics or an appropriate biological subject as a minimum for entry to the NHS Scotland post-graduate training scheme for Genomics and Molecular Pathology.

The training will be delivered by the Laboratory Genetics department which forms part of the West of Scotland Centre for Genomic Medicine. The department provides a high quality genetics service to the West of Scotland, population 2.7 million, and to the whole of Scotland through the Scottish Strategic Network for Genomic Medicine. Based at the state of the art Laboratory Medicine building at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, the Laboratory Genetics department is responsible for the testing of inherited genetic disease and acquired genetic disease (solid and haematological malignancy). Training will follow an agreed training programme framework, which will enable the trainee to build a portfolio of evidence in the Molecular Pathology discipline for assessment and subsequent registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist.

One post is available to train in Molecular Pathology at the West of Scotland Centre for Genomic Medicine in Glasgow supported by NHS Education for Scotland (NES). Additional training posts as part of the same scheme within the other Regional Genetic Laboratories, are being advertised separately. The Glasgow laboratory offers a high standard of facilities and expertise. Training commences in September 2025 on a three-year contract of employment. Healthcare Science within the NHS has a well-defined career structure and continued professional development is actively encouraged.

The shift pattern for this post is Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm.
