Job summary

Red Deer Polytechnic is seeking a Trades Shop Technician – Mechanical/Industrial to support day-to-day operations in the School of Trades and Technology. You will troubleshoot, repair tools, and assist students and instructors with procurement, installation, testing, and calibration of equipment.

The position is permanent, 35 hours per week, with 5-day work weeks and a salary range of $33.32–$38.98 per hour. First review of applications is Aug 27, 2026, and the job will remain open until filled.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training or equivalent.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in related roles.

Position Title

Position Summary

The School of Trades and Technology is looking for a Trades Shop Technician – Mechanical / Industrial.
The Mechanical / Industrial Technician will provide self-directed technical support for the day-to-day operations of various related Trades. The successful candidate must be able to troubleshoot, solve problems, and repair tools and basic equipment under tight timelines. He or she will be required to support students and instructors in the School of Trades and Technologies through the procurement of materials, supplies, and equipment as well as the installation, testing, and calibration of equipment. This position will also support related activities throughout the School of Trades and Technologies when required. This position is a permanent position and is required 5 days per week (35 hours).

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Designs, prototypes, tests, modifies and delivers a wide range of custom-made projects to meet unique specifications.
  • Cuts student materials, stores and distributes materials as required.
  • Distributes inventory to instructors and keeps track of inventory shortages so replacements are ordered.
  • Procures materials and tools as required in consultation with manager.
  • Sets up and disassembles a variety of equipment as well as a number of complex mock-ups.
  • Repairs, receives, and sets up new tools and control inventory.
  • Troubleshoots problems with equipment and tools under tight timelines.
  • Conducts regular maintenance and repairs of the Shop facilities and equipment.
  • Keeps current with Safety regulations & communicates expectations and changes to colleagues, instructors, and students
  • Maintains Safety policy with all the Trades Shop/Lab facilities.
  • Checks and maintains safety equipment.
  • Explains and enforces Safety procedures to individuals using the Shop/Lab facilities. Disposes of hazardous waste in storage areas (i.e. antifreeze, used oil, gasoline) using proper procedures.
  • Maintains SDS inventory and WHMIS records.
  • Purchases and maintains accurate inventories of consumables, materials and equipment for department.
  • Participates in decision-making for capital purchases, research alternatives, complete a cost- benefit analysis of technical features and makes recommendations for purchases.
  • Receives supplies of materials and other goods and arrange for proper storage.
  • Distributes Shop equipment and materials as needed and arrange for shipment of materials to off-site campuses.
  • Procures materials, tools, and equipment in consultation with the Technical Service Manager, APAC’s, and Faculty.
  • Communicates safe & proper usage of equipment and tools to the departments
  • Price schedule and track all off campus repairs and shipments
  • Consults, research, designs and fabricates and/or modifies equipment as requested by the Technical services Manager.
  • Coordinates Shop/Lab use for multiple classes and develops a plan to use Shop/Lab space to maximum efficiency in collaboration with the Technical Services Manager.
  • Adapts to accommodate changing needs of scheduled classes.

Required Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate and/or including trades apprenticeships or equivalent.
  • Three (3) to five (5) Years’ experience.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Sound decision making ability and problem solving skills.
  • Be familiar with trades programs and related componentry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Training or experience in calibration standards an asset.
  • Proficient computer skills and experience in material management (purchasing, inventory)
  • First Aid/ CPR and WHMIS certification.
  • Willingness to learn and keep up to date on technology, and advance skills through courses and PD opportunities.
  • Experienced in working successfully as part of a team and individually.
  • Proficient computer skills and experience in material management (purchasing, inventory)
  • Safety training in trades-related programs.
  • Forklift and electric pallet jack experience.

Salary or Hourly? Hourly

Salary $33.32 - $38.98 per hour

Benefits and Compensation Information

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
