Job summary

Durham College in Oshawa is seeking a Trades Helper in the Facilities department. The role supports licensed trades workers in daily operations, maintenance and repairs of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical systems at the Oshawa campus.

Ideal candidates will have a 2-year diploma in Building Operator or Gas Technician 2, plus 2 years of relevant experience. Valid G driver’s license and ability to work in a team are required.

Qualifications

• Two-year diploma in Building Operator, Gas Technician 2 or equivalent is required.
• Two-years work experience troubleshooting and repairing HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
• Knowledge of Energy Act, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical codes and CSA standards is expected.
• Ability to work independently and in a group; excellent problem solving and analysis skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist licensed trades workers with daily operation, maintenance, repair and preventive/predictive maintenance of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
• Assist in maintaining the facility appearance including drywall, paint, ceiling tiles, doors and hardware.
• Maintain HVAC building support systems including heat recovery systems, motors, humidification systems and related components.
• Perform preventive and predictive maintenance, test and calibrate equipment, ensure code compliance and document activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The incumbent isresponsible for assisting the Licensed trades workers with the daily on-goingoperation, control, repair, preventative and predictive maintenance of heating,ventilation, air conditioning systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems andall associated fittings and piping. The incumbent is also responsible to assistin maintaining the appearance of the facility including drywall, paint, ceilingtiles, doors and hardware.

Assist with maintaining,updating, and repairing HVAC related building support systems including, heatrecovery systems, motors, humidification systems, re-heat coils, heat pumps,cooling towers, roof top heating and cooling systems, pneumatics, plumbingsystems, pumps, electrical and electronic controls.

Assist with performingscheduled predictive and preventative maintenance and repair on heating, ventilation,air conditioning, plumbing and electrical equipment. Test, calibrate, andadjust equipment. Ensurecode compliance of systems by performing inspections and testing.Prepare required documentation, update manuals, and provide informationregarding work conducted for input onto the computerized maintenance managementsystem. Use computers to monitor and adjust building automation systems.

Monitor and inspect work performed by contractors, trades workers, andmechanics and report findings and or discrepancies to Manager, Operations. Source information and parts by contacting vendors, technical librariesand internet to estimate material quantities and costs for projects and repairactivities. Purchase required materials via purchase order or corporate credit card. Provide technical information and support to unskilled staff as required. Assist with the installation and commissioning of new heating,ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing and electrical systems.

Qualifications

• A minimum of a two-year diploma as a Building Operator, Gas Technician 2 or equivalent is required.
• A minimum of two-years work experience troubleshooting and repairing systems related to HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical.
• Ability to assist with troubleshooting and repair old and new mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, electronic, and computerized systems.
• Working knowledge of Energy Act, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, related Code, CSA standards and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Excellent problem solving and analysis skills.
• Capable of working independently and in a group.
• Possession of a valid G driver’s licence is required.
