Job summary

UBC trades position seeks a Journeyman/Clark style Trades 3 - Utility Electrician to perform maintenance, diagnostics and installations across high and low voltage utility systems on campus.

The role requires responding to trouble calls, complying with safety rules and coordinating with tenants and management. You will document activities and maintain system records to support reliable university operations.

Responsibilities

Job Description Summary

Under general supervision, performs skilled work at the journey person level in preventive maintenance, breakdown maintenance, diagnostic repair, alterations and installations of electrical, electro-mechanical, control and communications systems and equipment pertaining to high voltage and low voltage utility systems.

Organizational Status

Reports to Head Electrician, UBC Energy & Water Service, Engineering & Utilities.

Work Performed

Performs duties normally required in the electrical trade (for which training and expertise has previously been acquired) such as: preventive and breakdown maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and installation as a High Voltage Utility Electrician across the university campus.

Works from oral and written instructions from immediate supervisor (s). Performs all duties as instructed in compliance with applicable regulatory codes and regulations and in accordance with work orders, drawings, documents, and time schedules.

Responds to Trouble Calls and emergencies, both during and outside normal work hours. Shares standby duty to maintain 24-hour, 7 days a week coverage.

Corrects electrical deficiencies brought forward by tenants through the service request program. Must have demonstrated experience in good client relationship skills.

Provides accurate and complete information (on the status of equipment and systems) when completing time entry, work orders, preventative maintenance reports, and test-inspection reports. Maintains concise record management for the department as approved by supervisor (s). Creates and submits as-built documentation once each work task is complete. Ensures that the workplace is clean and safe while following safe work practices.

Communicates with customers, tenants, managers, and coworkers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service. Solid verbal and written communication skills are mandatory.

Must continually improve operation of new and existing equipment.

Responsible for work being completed in accordance with requirements and specifications.

Responsible for the correct use and safekeeping of assigned vehicle, materials, tools, and equipment used in the execution of the work performed.

The individual shall keep current with trade maintenance concepts, technology, and theory and maintain familiarity with manufacturer's and regulatory maintenance requirements.

Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Ensures personal protective equipment is used at all times where required.

Ensures compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety legislation, guidelines, standards, policies, procedures and practices. Responsible for performing the work in the safest manner possible.

Detailed Duties:

• Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, distribution equipment, appliances, apparatus, fixtures, or other components, using hand tools, power tools, and various test instruments, to ensure compatibility and safety of the electrical system.
• Diagnose causes of Electrical Distribution and Electrical problems or failures in assigned systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems to be repaired.
• Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
• Perform installation, testing, and maintenance of:
  • 12 kV & 60kV substation and switchgear equipment,
  • Protective relay devices,
  • 12kV underground cables,
  • Metering systems for revenue customers and core building electrical services.
• Work in confined underground spaces as part of regular maintenance and construction activities.
• Work in outdoor environments on and off traffic corridors in all weather conditions as part of regular maintenance and construction activities.
• Work with heavy tools and equipment in excess of 50 lb. (23kg) as part of regular maintenance and construction activities.
• Work near exposed energized 12kV & 60kV equipment as part of regular maintenance activities.
