Job summary

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is seeking a hands-on technician to maintain and troubleshoot fare collection and transaction systems across the network. You will work on PRESTO devices, POP equipment, fare gates, LDCs, and security devices, performing complex repairs and testing.

You will follow safety protocols, support major component replacements, and participate in testing and commissioning activities.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 with a technical program or equivalent.
  • Community college level courses in electrical theory, PLC, and MIG/TIG welding or equivalent.
  • Experience with solid state equipment and complex troubleshooting.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license (Class G) or better.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and accessibility requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Support operation, maintenance, and reliability of fare dispensing and transaction equipment across TTC facilities.
  • Inspect, repair, test, calibrate and troubleshoot electrical, electronic and mechanical components.
  • Perform bench testing, setup, and commissioning of equipment; assist with installation and integration of fare systems.
  • Ensure safety, compliance, and professional conduct; uphold TTC’s diversity, equity and inclusion commitments.

Work hands-on with the TTC's critical fare collection and transaction systems, maintaining and troubleshooting the technology that powers millions of customer journeys every day.

What You Will Do

You will perform a variety of duties supporting the operation, maintenance, and reliability of fare dispensing, collection, and transaction equipment throughout the TTC, including but not limited to PRESTO devices, Proof of Payment (POP) equipment, Fare Gates/LDCs, and security devices such as vaults, receivers, and pedestals.

Responsibilities include performing complex inspection, maintenance, overhaul, commissioning, modification, repair, testing, calibration, and troubleshooting work on the electrical, electronic, and mechanical components of the equipment listed above, as well as other Revenue Service Equipment Maintenance (RSEM) equipment as required.

Work assignments will range from routine repairs to comprehensive equipment failure analysis and major component replacements. Duties may include bench work involving the setup and operation of specialized and standard test equipment to diagnose, test, and evaluate the performance of electrical and electronic components and assemblies; removing, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and reinstalling equipment components; and conducting or verifying the installation, commissioning, and operation of fare collection and related equipment.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
  • You have completed Grade 12, (technical program) or its equivalent as determined by the Training Department, including trade subjects in machine shop practice
  • Must have successfully completed Community College level courses in electrical theory, programmable logic controllers (PLC), and MIG and TIG Welding; or provide proof of equivalence from an accredited academic institution
  • Must have practical working experience with solid state equipment, performing complex troubleshooting, repairs and testing operations
  • Must have a valid, non-probationary, class “G” or better Ontario Driver’s License or better
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.

Other Requirements:

  • Must pass tests set by the Revenue Operations Department which correspond in content to the knowledge, theory, and/or practical requirements described above
  • Must pass the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) Check
  • Must successfully pass a physical assessment (including the ability to lift and carry bags of supplies and tools while walking and climbing/descending stairs)
  • Must attend and successfully complete the Training Department’s instruction and testing for the operation of a TTC vehicle
  • Must successfully complete Defensive Driving, Surface and Subway Rulebook training and recertification as required
  • Must attend and successfully complete the Loss Prevention Section’s training for robbery prevention and other departmental training related to the work (e.g. procedures, safety & security practices, etc.)
  • You will need to provide your own set of hand tools as per an established tool list
