Job summary

Minth North America, Inc. is seeking a Metallography and Materials Lab Technician in Windsor to perform full-process metallographic sample preparation and hardness testing, plus microstructural analysis, to support automotive projects.

The role involves maintaining a sample library, following safety procedures, and collaborating with production, quality, and engineering teams. You will handle tensile testing data and PPAP support, with experience in aluminum alloys and weld analysis preferred.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent; Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing or materials laboratory
  • Proficient in metallographic sample preparation process (cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching); proficient in operating metallurgical microscopes
  • Proficient in operation and maintenance of Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers hardness testers
  • Basic knowledge of universal testing machines, tensile testing, and other mechanical property test methods
  • Familiar with ASTM material testing standards (e.g., E3, E8, E10, E18, E92, E112, etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for data analysis and report generation
  • Detail-oriented with good documentation and communication skills
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime; familiar with laboratory safety procedures
  • Experience in aluminum alloy material or weld metallography analysis
  • Familiarity with SEM/EDS operation
  • Experience in automotive parts industry (especially battery boxes, aluminum extrusions)
  • Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory management systems
  • Relevant NDT certifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform full-process metallographic sample preparation including cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching
  • Conduct microstructural observation, grain size rating, phase content analysis, and defect identification using metallurgical microscopes
  • Analyze weld penetration depth, heat-affected zone, and weld microstructure of welded joints
  • Prepare and archive metallographic specimens; maintain metallographic sample library
  • Perform hardness testing using Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers testers and analyze data
  • Operate universal testing machines for tensile testing to obtain strength and elongation values
  • Perform other mechanical property tests per ASTM standards
  • Organize, analyze, and report test data
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and 5S safety; participate in audits and proficiency testing
  • Collaborate with production, process, quality and engineering teams for validation and problem-solving
  • Support material property validation for PPAP submissions for new projects
  • Assist in failure analysis projects with metallographic and hardness testing support

Job description

  • Metallographic Sample Preparation & Analysis
  • Perform full-process metallographic sample preparation including cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching
  • Conduct microstructural observation, grain size rating, phase content analysis, and defect identification (e.g., porosity, inclusions, cracks) using metallurgical microscopes
  • Analyze weld penetration depth, heat-affected zone, and weld microstructure of welded joints
  • Prepare and archive metallographic specimens; maintain metallographic sample library
  • Hardness Testing
  • Operate and maintain Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, and microhardness testers to perform hardness testing on metallic materials
  • Select appropriate hardness testing methods and loads based on material type and specification requirements
  • Perform gradient and cross-sectional hardness testing (e.g., on welded joints, heat-treated parts)
  • Record and analyze hardness data to determine material heat treatment status and process conformance
  • Material Mechanical Testing
  • Operate universal testing machines to perform tensile testing, obtaining ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation values
  • Perform other mechanical property tests in accordance with ASTM standards
  • Organize, analyze, and report test data
  • Laboratory Equipment Maintenance & Quality Management
  • Perform daily calibration, maintenance, and upkeep of testing equipment
  • Maintain laboratory consumables inventory, including hardness test blocks, chemicals, polishing consumables, etc.
  • Comply with laboratory safety procedures and 5S management requirements
  • Participate in internal laboratory audits and proficiency testing
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Collaborate with production, process, quality, and engineering teams to support process validation and problem-solving
  • Participate in failure analysis projects, providing metallographic and hardness testing support
  • Support material property validation required for PPAP submissions for new projects
