The Opportunity

We are seeking a detail-oriented and hands-on Test Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of our innovative battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will spend the majority of your time (80%+) in the R&D and production lab, setting up, running, and analyzing a wide variety of tests. Your work will directly contribute to our product development, certification, and overall success. The Role

  • Salary: $70,000 - $90,000 CAD per year

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop, execute, and document comprehensive test plans for various needs, including certification, compliance, R&D, component validation, and lifecycle testing.
  • Take primary ownership of hands-on test setup, including the wiring of thermocouples, power supplies, fuses, contactors, cameras, and cooling bench setups.
  • Design and build custom R&D test setups to investigate novel concepts and failure modes.
  • Build certification test setups from cell up to BESS-level for pre-compliance tests and live witness testing by certified test labs.
  • Work directly with high-voltage DC and AC systems (up to 1000VDC, 600VAC), ensuring all safety protocols are rigorously followed.
  • Operate and manage battery cyclers to perform tests on cells, modules, racks, and full BESS units.
  • Set up and configure data acquisition systems (Agilent DAQ, LabVIEW) for data capture and log battery parameters (BMS data) over CAN and Modbus.
  • Utilize standard test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters to diagnose and validate system performance.
  • Create and develop scripts to automate test equipment, data gathering, and long-term tests.
  • Analyze test data using Python, summarize findings, and create clear, concise reports and presentations for the engineering team.
  • Support the team with battery abuse testing, including sample preparation and test setup coordination.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate lab test equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Contribute to the creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for testing and lab activities.
The Candidate

We’re looking for individuals with the following traits, skills, and experiences:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a hands-on testing, validation, or verification role.
  • Demonstrated experience working safely with high-voltage DC and AC systems.
  • Proven ability to create test plans, design experiments, and document results.
  • Hands-on proficiency in wiring, soldering, and assembling complex electro-mechanical test setups.
  • Experience with data acquisition hardware and software (DAQ systems, LabVIEW, etc.).
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as CAN or Modbus.
Nice-to-Have Experience:
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery systems, battery cyclers, and battery management systems (BMS).
  • Knowledge of safety and compliance standards for batteries and energy storage, such as UL1973 or UL9540.
  • Experience with data capture, test automation, or data analysis using scripting languages like Python or command interfaces like SCPI.
  • Familiarity with power electronics, inverters, and thermal management systems.
