Job summary

BC Hydro in Burnaby, BC seeks Telecom Engineers at multiple levels to design and implement robust telecom networks for critical grid operations. You will lead IP/MPLS deployments, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, and provide technical leadership during field work.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years for Senior Engineer or 4+ for Engineer 2, with P.Eng or EIT status and strong communication skills suitable for cross-disciplinary teams. A flexible work arrangement is possible.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or closely related field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or EIT with EGBC, or equivalent registration.
  • 8+ years for Senior Engineer; 4+ years for Engineer 2; Engineer 1 possible with EIT option.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design of telecommunications networks and circuits for reliability, performance, and security to support real-time grid operations.
  • Act as Professional of Record and Owner’s Engineer for internal and external submissions.
  • Ensure designs meet safety, technical, and regulatory requirements with high engineering standards.
  • Design and implement IP/MPLS network architectures including planning, lab validation, testing, and migration.
  • Develop QoS and traffic engineering solutions for critical services like SCADA and protection systems.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and construction teams to meet safety, cost, and milestone requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership during installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Conduct specialized studies to address complex transport and cybersecurity challenges.

  • The candidate will be responsible for leading the design of telecommunications networks and circuits, ensuring high levels of reliability, performance, and security to support real-time grid operations and evolving utility technologies.
  • The candidate will be required to act as the Professional of Record (PoR) for internal designs and serve as the Owner’s Engineer for submissions from external engineering service providers.
  • The candidate must ensure that all designs meet applicable safety, technical, and regulatory requirements while maintaining high engineering standards.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing design calculations, drawings, and installation documentation required for the construction and implementation of telecommunications infrastructure including microwave radio links, fiber optic networks, WiMAX radio network, Satellite communications, Power Line Carrier links, LTE, leased facilities, IP/MPLS networks, Digital cross-connect switches, SONET multiplexer, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio, teleprotection, and -48 VDC power systems.
  • The candidate will be required to design and implement IP and MPLS network architectures for utility telecommunications systems, including network planning, configuration, lab validation, interoperability testing, and migration execution.
  • The candidate will be responsible for developing advanced quality of service (QoS) and traffic engineering solutions to ensure reliable performance for critical services such as SCADA and protection systems, supported by detailed documentation and field validation.
  • The candidate will be responsible for partnering with Project Managers and construction teams to meet safety, cost, and milestone requirements.
  • The candidate will be responsible for resolving complex field issues and guiding construction teams.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing technical leadership during installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • The candidate will be responsible for conducting specialized engineering studies and in-depth technical investigations to address complex challenges related to transport networks, SCADA communications, protection circuits, and cybersecurity aspects of telecommunications infrastructure.
  • The candidate must ensure that all engineering work complies with applicable regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and industry best practices, while maintaining a high level of technical integrity and accountability.
  • The candidate will be required to participate in site visits and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to validate design intent, support field implementation, and contribute to maintenance and emergency restoration activities when critical telecommunications systems are impacted.
Job Requirements
  • The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • The candidate must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or hold equivalent registration in another Canadian jurisdiction or internationally. Candidates who are actively working toward registration with EGBC will also be considered.
  • The candidate must have design experience with telecom technologies such as Microwave radio links, fiber optic networks (DWDM/OTN), WiMAX radio network, satellite communications, Power Line Carrier links, LTE, leased facilities, Digital cross-connect switches, SONET multiplexer, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio, teleprotection, -48V DC power systems and grounding; and TDM (SONET/PDH) and IP/MPLS circuits, including circuits carrying teleprotection and RAS.
  • The candidate must have experience in IP/MPLS architecture and design—covering IPv4/IPv6, OSPF, IS IS, BGP, MPLS/VPN, EVPN, Segment
    Routing, QoS, Traffic Engineering, and security across large scale LAN/WAN environments.
  • The candidate must have experience configuring and deploying Nokia IP/MPLS platforms including L2/L3VPN and QoS technologies.
  • The candidate may have a Cisco Certified Internet Expert (CCIE) certification, which is considered an asset.
  • The candidate may have Nokia NRS II (Nokia Network Routing Specialist) Certification or Nokia Certified Service Routing Architect (SRA) certification, which are considered assets.
  • The candidate must have 8+ years of relevant experience for a Senior Engineer position.
  • The candidate must have 4+ years of relevant experience for an Engineer 2 position.
  • The candidate with less experience may be considered for an Engineer 1 position, provided they are or are eligible to be registered as an EIT with EGBC.
  • The candidate must demonstrate excellence in technical writing and verbal communication.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently, take initiative in solving complex technical problems, and seek guidance when appropriate.
  • The candidate must have a solid understanding of project management processes, contract management, and construction oversight.
  • The candidate must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing to support site visits and field activities.
