Job summary

BC Hydro is seeking a Senior Telecom Network Engineer to deliver telecommunications engineering and system design for medium-complexity projects in Burnaby, BC. The role focuses on designing IP/MPLS networks, DAS, and public/private LTE and 5G deployments, ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Canadian university.
• Minimum 8 years of progressive engineering experience in telecommunications system design.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC, or eligible for immediate registration.
• Experience with IP/MPLS, DAS, Public/Private LTE, and 5G network design.
• Strong communication, technical writing, interpersonal, leadership, and presentation skills.
• Familiarity with CAD systems, drawing standards, and MS Office applications.

About the Role

BC Hydro is seeking a Senior Telecom Network Engineer to provide telecommunications engineering and system design services for medium-complexity projects and operations. The successful candidate will have strong experience designing telecommunications networks, with particular expertise in IP/MPLS, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), and Public/Private LTE and 5G networks.

The Engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary project teams, stakeholders, contractors, and external engineering service providers to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions that meet BC Hydro standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Develop telecommunications engineering designs and solutions for BC Hydro projects and operations, analyze and resolve complex technical and field engineering issues, prepare and review engineering documentation and technical deliverables, provide technical and construction support including field reviews and site inspections, act as Professional of Record (PoR) and prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables where required, review external service providers’ designs for technical compliance, constructability, and adherence to BC Hydro standards, conduct peer reviews and provide technical guidance to engineers and technical staff, support project management with cost estimates, schedules, progress reporting, contractor coordination, and technical recommendations, participate in the development and improvement of engineering standards and practices, coordinate telecommunications design activities with multidisciplinary project teams, resolve site queries and support construction activities, maintain complete engineering and project documentation, ensure compliance with BC Hydro engineering practices, Project and Portfolio Management practices, EGBC requirements, and applicable regulations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Canadian university, minimum 8 years of progressive engineering experience in telecommunications system design and engineering, Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or registered/eligible for immediate registration with EGBC, experience with IP/MPLS technologies, experience with Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), experience designing Public and Private LTE networks, experience with 5G network design, strong understanding of telecommunications network design and engineering principles, strong communication, technical writing, interpersonal, leadership, and presentation skills, good understanding of project and task management processes, intermediate English skills, familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards, ability to use industry-standard engineering design and analysis software, intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice-to-Have Experience

WiMAX, SONET, TDM systems, mobile radio systems, teleprotection circuits, antennas and towers, grounding systems, and other telecommunications technologies.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate must have their own sole practitioner Permit to Practice with EGBC or access to their firm’s Permit to Practice prior to commencing the assignment. Work performed under the assignment will be subject to BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management requirements. The successful candidate may be required to use BC Hydro’s digital sign and seal technology through Notarius.
