Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Survey Technology, Geomatics Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related discipline.
  • 2–5 years of experience in surveying, geomatics, or municipal infrastructure construction is preferred.
  • Experience with municipal road construction, drainage systems, and earthworks is an asset.

  • Operate GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and other survey equipment.

  • Prepare drawings, plans, profiles, specifications, and layouts for road construction, paving, drainage, and capital projects.
  • Collaborate with County staff, contractors, consultants, and landowners to support project delivery.
  • Maintain survey equipment and vehicles in safe operating condition.

Overview

Operations Department | Permanent Full-Time Position | Monday – Friday

Spring, Summer, Fall hours 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (weather dependent)
Winter hours 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (weather dependent)

Lacombe County is seeking a skilled and motivated Technical Services Coordinator (Surveyor) to join our Operations team. This position provides technical, field, and design support for the County’s construction and infrastructure projects.

This position is responsible for surveying, construction layout and staking, road design support, data collection, drafting, and project coordination activities required to support County construction activities. If you enjoy a blend of fieldwork, technology, and problem-solving, and want to contribute to the successful delivery of construction and infrastructure projects that serve our rural communities,

Surveying & Construction Support
  • Plan and conduct field surveys for road construction, drainage improvements, culvert installations, rights-of-way, and other municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Operate GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and other survey equipment.
  • Perform construction layout, staking, cross-sections, and quantity measurements.
  • Complete surveying activities related to roads, drainage systems, fence lines, cemeteries, and other County infrastructure.
  • Lead and provide direction to the Survey Assistant on field procedures, equipment operation, and safe work practices.
Design & Technical Services
  • Prepare drawings, plans, profiles, specifications, and layouts for road construction, paving, drainage, and capital projects.
  • Develop road designs, gravel pit plans, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Maintain and utilize road design, drafting, and survey software.
Project Coordination
  • Collaborate with County staff, contractors, consultants, and landowners to support project delivery, such as coordinating line painting surveys, road marking activities, and documenting culvert installations.
Safety & Equipment Management
  • Maintain survey equipment and vehicles in safe operating condition.
  • Participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and health and safety initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain safe work practices for survey operations.
  • Commit to workplace safety and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Diploma or Certificate in Survey Technology, Geomatics Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 to 5 years of experience in surveying, geomatics, or municipal infrastructure construction.
  • Experience with municipal road construction, drainage systems, and earthworks is considered an asset.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, survey data collection software, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Alberta’s Spatial Information System (SPIN2) is preferred.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, construction specifications, legal land descriptions, and survey plans.
  • Knowledge of road construction practices, grading principles, drainage systems, and municipal infrastructure.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Requirements
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain, perform physically demanding fieldwork, including lifting equipment up to 50lbs.
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to live and work in Canada.
  • This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. The successful applicant will need to participate in the Pre-employment Drug & Alcohol Testing.
