Job summary

Catterall & Wright Consulting Engineers is seeking an Intermediate Survey Technologist to join our Survey Group in Saskatchewan. The role focuses on field surveys, construction layout, and boundary-related projects across municipal infrastructure and land development.

You will lead complex field assignments, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with engineering teams while upholding cadastral surveying standards in Saskatchewan. A permanent, full-time position, Monday–Friday.

Qualifications

  • Must have 5+ years of progressive industry experience (7+ years in lieu of diploma).
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with municipal infrastructure surveying and cadastral practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field survey assignments and provide technical guidance to junior staff.
  • Oversee construction layout for municipal projects (water, sewer, roadways, grading).
  • Conduct boundary and legal surveys in line with applicable acts and regulations.
  • Prepare grade sheets and documentation for projects.
  • Coordinate with project managers, contractors, and internal teams.

We are looking for anIntermediate Survey Technologist to join our Survey Group and support a wide range of municipal infrastructure, land development, construction, and boundary‑related projects. This role is ideal for an experienced survey professional who thrives in the field, takes ownership of their work, and enjoys mentoring others while contributing to meaningful community projects across Saskatchewan.

This is a permanent, full‑time role, Monday through Friday (40 hours per week).

The Opportunity

In this role, you’ll lead complex field survey assignments, support construction and legal survey activities, collaborate closely with engineering and project teams, and provide technical guidance to junior staff — all while continuing to strengthen your expertise in municipal and cadastral surveying practices.

What You’ll Do

Some of your key responsibilities include:

  • Perform preliminary, topographic, construction layout, and record (as‑built) surveys using GPS/GNSS, total station, level equipment, and UAV technology.
  • Oversee and execute construction layout for municipal infrastructure projects, including water, sewer, roadways, and grading works.
  • Conduct legal land surveys in accordance with The Land Surveyors Act and Regulations, including boundary surveys, subdivision surveys and right‑of‑way surveys.
  • Collect precise measurements to support boundary re‑establishment and subdivision‑related deliverables.
  • Interpret survey plans, legal descriptions, and design drawings to support field activities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and defensible field notes and documentation.
  • Process survey data using established control, coordinate systems, and quality control procedures.
  • Prepare grade sheets and supporting documentation for municipal projects.
  • Conduct site inspections to verify that construction aligns with approved drawings and specifications.
  • Track and verify construction quantities to support contract administration and progress payments.Provide technical guidance to junior staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of field procedures.
  • Communicate project status and coordinate effectively with project managers, contractors, and internal teams.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily outdoor fieldwork with some office‑based data processing.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions throughout the year.
  • Travel outside Saskatoon required approximately 5% of the time, including occasional overnight stays.
  • Frequent walking over uneven terrain, lifting equipment, hammering survey monuments, and working in active construction environments.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.

Education/Experience
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle, preferably a truck.
  • Driver’s abstract and Criminal Record Check are required.
  • Technical diploma in Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or related municipal program.
  • Typically 5+ years of progressive industry experience (7+ years in lieu of diploma).
  • Preference given to individuals with a P.Tech. designation (or working toward).
Skills/Abilities
  • Strong working knowledge of construction and municipal infrastructure surveying.
  • Working knowledge of legal survey principles, boundary evidence, and cadastral field practices.
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D and survey data processing workflows.
  • Experience with GPS/GNSS, total stations, and UAV survey technology.
  • Ability to interpret design drawings, specifications, and survey plans.
  • Strong understanding of coordinate systems and survey control.
  • Excellent documentation practices and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize effectively.
  • Practical, solution‑oriented mindset aligned with constructible and cost‑effective outcomes.
  • Clear and professional communication skills with contractors, clients, and internal teams.
