The Role

We are seeking a Technical Officer to support our Ocean Coastal River Engineering Research Centre. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect, and Creativity.

At the Ocean Costal and River Engineering Research Centre, the researchers are using physical modelling techniques to find real world solutions to ongoing challenges present in the natural world. Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, the incumbent is responsible to provide mechanical / millwright work including maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting and improvements of equipment and instruments throughout the Research Centre. This also includes conceiving, fabricating, and documenting novel mechanical equipment needed for internal and client driven projects and for looking after all facilities’ specialised equipment.

The Technical Officer must maintain all equipment to the required standards and be responsive to research needs and equipment failures. The Technical Officer will work as part of a team to support the research work in the facilities but will also routinely perform work independently and maintain high accuracy and safety while performing their duties.

Key activities:

  • Independently conceives, fabricates, machines and assembles complex components and equipment required for commercial research projects and commercial studies. This includes working from rough sketches, verbal instructions, or drawings.
  • Maintain equipment in accordance with schedules and maintenance requirements and undertakes repairs in accordance with identified solutions. Ensures that the equipment is in good working order.
  • Conceives equipment parts required for maintenance, fabricates them using existing machining equipment such as a manual lathe and documents the mechanical equipment with drawings and notes.
  • Part of the preventative maintenance program, prepares maintenance schedule for all equipment including the wave generators located in each facility. Provides advice and suggestions on ways to reduce equipment down-time and repair cost.
  • Provide technical advice to clients and supervisor on issues related to mechanical maintenance, repair and modifications and new equipment acquisition.
  • Maintains inventory control of mechanical spare parts and components to reduce facility equipment down-time to a minimum.
  • Maintain, troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic systems and components and a wide range of other equipment, including pumps, motors, actuators, accumulators, hoses, reservoir, heat exchangers, gear boxes, conveyor, drive systems, fans, etc.
  • Documents, records and maintains an equipment database for the facilities.
  • Operates heavy lifting equipment such as forklift and overhead cranes.
Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Degree or diploma from a recognised Technical College in Mechanical Engineering Technology; or a combination of formal relevant training and extensive experience in the technical repairs and maintenance in a machine shop environment; may also be accepted.

  • Significant and recent experience applying machine shop practices in a millwright or maintenance and repair capacity
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical problems with a wide range of types of equipment
  • Experience repairing machine tools and equipment
  • Experience in maintaining and repairing hydraulic systems and components
  • Experience working with various materials including wood, plastic, pvc, stainless steel, aluminium, tin, brass and plexiglass
  • Experience operating forklift, skid steer and cranes; including rigging

Will be considered an asset:

  • Experience using CAD/Cam software will be considered an asset
  • Experience in welding and joining various materials will be considered an asset

*Significant – 2 to 6 years

Condition of Employment

Reliability Status

For a Reliability Status, verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Solid knowledge of the characteristics and performance of industrial equipment including hydraulic systems, material sorters, and conveyors and the principles for diagnosing, repairing and maintaining them.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Solid knowledge of machine shop equipment and its use.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, hydraulic systems and workshop equipment, and practices for their safe operation and maintenance
  • Knowledge of welding processes and their application
  • Ability to analyse blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications and sample parts to determine dimensions and produce the intended components and assemblies.
  • Ability to identify options, develop solutions, and take action when responding to customer requests and deadlines.
  • Ability to operate material-moving equipment such as forklift and overhead cranes will be considered an asset.
  • Technology support - Results orientation (Level 2)
  • Technology support - Conceptual and analytical ability (Level 2)

  • Requires daily intermittent periods of standing, walking and sitting at a work bench; working in awkward positions; bending and stretching; moving lightweight objects and large, awkward and heavier objects on occasion; operating hand and power tools and equipment; climbing stairs and ladders on occasion.
  • Work is typically performed in laboratory, plant or shop environment that includes daily exposure to background noise from tools and equipment and regular exposure to chemicals, dirt, noise, noxious odours, hazardous equipment and substances, extreme temperature or other awkward conditions. Work can be performed indoors or outdoor and working on uneven terrain and from heights.
  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
