Job description

We have created a role for a Technical Manager, Automotive and Industrial with a passion for open source and precision engineering. Today, Canonical provides secure and reliable products to our industrial and automotive partners. Our solutions bridge the gap between open-source innovation and industry-specific requirements, including stringent certification processes. Our goal is to enable industries such as automotive to leverage our open source portfolio, from the factory to the cloud, supporting automotive innovation with the most secure and advanced platform.

Your role will include growing and leading a team of dedicated engineers focused on adapting our products to automotive and industrial requirements. You will represent Canonical and Ubuntu in the industrial and automotive communities and standards consortia. Your team will ensure our Linux distribution and products support standards related to processes, cybersecurity, and safety, such as IEC 61508, ISO9001, ISO 21434, UNECE R155 & R156, ISO26262 ASIL (B to D), and ASPICE. You will also work to enhance delivery quality, security, and developer experience, leading, challenging, and influencing the culture and strategy in collaboration with your team. You will report directly to the Vice President of Engineering Excellence and work closely with the Automotive Product Manager to define and execute the vision and roadmap for automotive at Canonical.

Location: This is a globally remote role.

What you'll do
  1. Work with Product Management to refine the vision and strategy for automotive at Canonical.
  2. Define and execute an engineering roadmap for the automotive team at Canonical.
  3. Represent Ubuntu and Canonical in the automotive community, to customers, partners, and consortia.
  4. Lead our Linux distribution and open source software strategy in automotive.
  5. Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers, guiding and overseeing their work.
  6. Develop skills through coaching, feedback, and hands-on technical leadership.
  7. Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  8. Advocate for and implement modern, agile software development practices.
  9. Help develop and promote excellent engineering and organizational practices.
  10. Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  11. Work from home with international travel twice a year, up to two weeks at a time for company events.
Who you are
  1. You have a strong background in software engineering, Linux, and open source.
  2. You possess in-depth knowledge of Linux packages and embedded development.
  3. You are familiar with automotive and industry standards such as ISO21434, ISO26262, SOTIF, IEC 61508, and have led product development initiatives that meet these standards.
  4. You have experience in C/C++ and Python programming.
  5. You have practical experience in automotive systems, including functional safety, embedded systems, and cloud software trends.
  6. You have led, managed, coached, and mentored software developers.
  7. You have a proven track record of delivering high-quality, timely software.
  8. You are passionate about developing and growing people.
  9. You have experience working in an agile development environment.
What we offer you

Your compensation will depend on factors like location, experience, and skills. In addition to a competitive base pay, we offer benefits such as a $2,000 annual learning and development budget, annual reviews, recognition rewards, holiday leave, parental leave, an Employee Assistance Program, opportunities for travel, and travel upgrades for company events.
