We have created a role for a Technical Manager, Automotive and Industrial with a passion for open source and precision engineering. Canonical provides secure and reliable products to industrial and automotive partners, bridging open-source innovation with industry-specific requirements, including certification processes. Our goal is to enable industries such as automotive to leverage our open source portfolio, supporting from factory to cloud, and ensuring security and advanced platforms for automotive innovation.

Your role involves leading a team of dedicated engineers to adapt our products to automotive and industrial requirements. You will represent Canonical and Ubuntu in relevant community and standards consortia, ensuring our Linux distribution and products support standards like IEC 61508, ISO9001, ISO 21434, UNECE R155 & R156, ISO26262 ASIL, and ASPICE. You will also focus on enhancing delivery quality, security, and developer experience, leading strategy and execution, and working closely with the Vice President of Engineering Excellence and the Automotive Product Manager.

This is a globally remote role.

What you'll do

  1. Refine the vision and strategy for automotive at Canonical with Product Management.
  2. Define and execute an engineering roadmap for the automotive team.
  3. Represent Ubuntu and Canonical in the automotive community, customers, partners, and consortia.
  4. Lead Linux distribution and open source software strategy in automotive.
  5. Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers, guiding and overseeing their work.
  6. Develop skills through coaching, feedback, and hands-on technical leadership.
  7. Manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  8. Promote modern, agile software development practices.
  9. Develop and evangelize engineering and organizational practices.
  10. Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  11. Work from home with international travel up to twice a year for company events.

Who you are

  1. Strong background in software engineering, Linux, and open source.
  2. In-depth knowledge of Linux packages and embedded development.
  3. Knowledge of automotive and industry standards such as ISO21434, ISO26262, SOTIF, IEC 61508, with experience leading compliant product development.
  4. Proficiency in C/C++ and Python programming.
  5. Practical experience in automotive, including functional safety, embedded systems, and cloud software trends.
  6. Experience leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers.
  7. Track record of timely delivery and high-quality software.
  8. Passion for developing and growing people.
  9. Experience working in an agile development environment.
