Job description

Orium is the leading composable commerce consultancy and systems integrator in the Americas. We have over a decade of experience in digital programs, working closely with best-in-class technology partners to bring modern commerce experiences to life as a member of the MACH Alliance.

We’re a remote-first company of over 250 globally-distributed employees. A certified BCorp for over a decade, we’re based in Toronto with a global studio presence, drawing from a range of talents and perspectives to bring together data, systems thinking, and curiosity to build next-generation experiences. We’re building deep capabilities in data-driven design, AI implementation, and personalization while forming strong partnerships with leaders in machine learning, hardware development, and IoT platforms.

In June 2024, we acquired the Mexico-based e-commerce agency, Gluo.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Business Analyst (TBA) to join our agile Scrum team. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, exceptional analytical skills, and experience in ecommerce and retail. As a Technical Business Analyst at Orium, you will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between business requirements and technical solutions, ensuring our projects align with strategic goals and deliver value to our clients.

The TBA will support the discovery and definition phase or our projects, working closely with an Orium Consultant/Strategist to define acceptance criteria for the release plan and ensure all technical and business requirements are well-documented before moving into execution. Additionally, the TBA will actively work during the deploy phase, collaborating with the Product Owner (PO) and Scrum team to ensure tickets are thoroughly fleshed out and clear for the development team to execute efficiently.

Responsibilities

Discovery & Definition Support:

  • Actively participate in the discovery and definition phase, collaborating with the Consultant/Strategist to refine business objectives.
  • Assist in writing clear acceptance criteria for the release plan, ensuring alignment with business goals and technical feasibility.
  • Support stakeholders by clarifying requirements early in the project lifecycle, reducing ambiguity in later execution phases.
  • Work closely with the PO and Scrum team to ensure backlog items are well-defined and executable.
  • Refine and elaborate user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical specifications to provide clarity for development teams.
  • Participate in sprint planning and backlog refinement to ensure tickets are accurate, comprehensive, and ready for execution.
  • Act as a point of contact for developers and QA to answer questions, clarify requirements, and resolve ambiguities during the development cycle.

Requirements Gathering and Analysis:

  • Investigate business needs and translate them into clear, actionable technical requirements.
  • Participate in workshops and meetings to capture user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure requirements are well-defined and feasible.

Solution Design:

  • Work closely with the Product Owner and technical team to define solutions that leverage Orium’s expertise in MACH architecture, ensuring they align with the client's business objectives.
  • Ensure technical requirements are comprehensive and well-documented, reducing ambiguity and facilitating smooth development.
  • Actively participate in all Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Contribute to backlog refinement and prioritization, ensuring clarity and feasibility of user stories.
  • Work closely with developers and QA to clarify requirements and facilitate issue resolution.

Documentation and Communication:

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of requirements, functional specifications, and system interactions.
  • Effectively communicate with both technical team members and non-technical stakeholders to ensure alignment and shared understanding.
  • Create and manage process flows, wireframes, and system diagrams where necessary.

Problem-Solving:

  • Identify project risks, dependencies, and bottlenecks, proposing effective mitigation strategies.
  • Drive continuous improvement within the team and organization by identifying opportunities for efficiency and optimization.
  • Collaborate with engineering and QA teams to validate solutions and ensure smooth implementation.

Client Support and Triage:

  • Facilitate requirements gathering and prioritization for long-term Support clients, ensuring their needs are met efficiently.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving client-reported issues by coordinating with internal teams.
  • Stay informed of the latest trends in composable commerce, MACH architecture, and agile methodologies.
  • Provide insights into industry best practices and help drive innovation within the team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Business Analyst, with at least 1 year in a technical capacity within an agile environment.
  • Strong understanding and experience in ecommerce and has worked within a retail environment for at least 1 year.
  • Understands, and is excited by composable commerce concepts.
  • Proficiency in documenting requirements and using tools such as JIRA, Confluence, or equivalent.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with MACH architecture (Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native, and Headless) is highly desirable.
  • Agile/Scrum certification is a plus!
  • Experience with modern digital tools and an openness to integrating AI-powered solutions to enhance development efficiency, automation, and problem-solving.*
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an ability to critically evaluate AI-assisted decision-making, workflow automation, and its impact on software development processes.*
  • A mindset of continuous learning, with a demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and trends.*

*AI expectations will vary by role—some positions will focus on AI exploration and experimentation, while leadership roles may drive AI adoption and strategy.

Is this Role a Fit for You?

The Technical Business Analyst role calls for someone who thrives at the intersection of business goals and technical delivery. You’ll find fulfillment in this role if you:

  • Thrive in translating complexity into clarity. You enjoy diving deep into business challenges and translating them into well-structured, actionable requirements. You love making things understandable for both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Are detail-obsessed and systems-minded. You have a knack for understanding how things work—and how they should work. You find satisfaction in aligning moving parts, identifying gaps, and ensuring smooth execution across phases of a project.
  • Love being a connector. You see yourself as a bridge between strategy and implementation. You’re skilled at bringing people together—Consultants, POs, developers, QA, and clients—to ensure shared understanding and project success.
  • Enjoy problem-solving in fast-paced environments. You bring a calm, curious mindset to ambiguity and complexity. Whether it’s working through sprint planning or clarifying a last-minute ticket, you’re ready to jump in and keep things moving.
  • Take pride in supporting others. You’re not just task-focused—you’re team-focused. You support your colleagues by making their work easier, better, and more efficient through clear documentation, thoughtful collaboration, and proactive communication.
  • Keep a pulse on evolving technologies. You’re eager to learn about composable commerce, MACH architecture, and emerging practices in agile delivery, and you bring insights that help raise the bar for your team and clients.
  • Are adaptable and eager to leverage AI-powered tools to enhance execution, collaboration, and decision-making—without losing the human touch.
  • Have a track record of evolving with industry trends and approaching emerging tech with an open mind.
  • Are naturally curious and look for ways to incorporate AI or automation into your work to improve efficiency, creativity, and problem-solving.

Benefits and Perks

  • Enjoy a flexible schedule of full-time hours. As a remote-first organization, we care about the work you do, but it’s up to you to choose where and how you do it.
  • Explore ongoing opportunities for professional development: training, conferences, certifications, and in-house peer mentorship.
  • Experiment with new techniques, wear multiple hats and learn about new disciplines.
  • Pursue independent projects, explore new ideas, and challenge yourself in your field with dedicated “Awesome time” (self-directed professional development) annually and quarterly training budgets.
  • On top of standard medical and dental coverage, we offer benefits like a parental leave top-up plan, an EAP, mental health coverage, virtual healthcare and a minimum vacation policy.
  • Additional perks are available including in-house mindfulness sessions, remote group get-togethers, and more!

Performance and Growth Expectations

We emphasize accountability for outcomes, but autonomy in activities. Your work will be measured across a number of data points (peer, leader & project team feedback) and will also be measured on the basis of client and user satisfaction. Your growth path is in your hands— you’ll have ongoing meetings with your leader to help determine your path, but your progress will be based on what you hope to achieve and how you choose to access the resources available to you.

Committed to an Inclusive Workplace

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible environment as we build a workforce that reflects the diversity of the community in which we live, including those with disabilities. We are dedicated to providing accommodations in all parts of the hiring process in accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code. If you require any accommodation, we will work with you to meet your needs.

Committed to Social and Environmental Stewardship

Orium is committed to promoting and working towards a more socially and environmentally sustainable future. All employees are expected to make decisions and take actions in relation to their role and work that follow through on this commitment.
