Job description

The Machining Operations Team Leader is responsible for the oversight of all metal machining operations for the plant, with primary duties focused on driving optimal on-time product output, while also ensuring strict quality standards are always met. This role reports directly to the Plant Supervisor and is a key member of the management team.

Daily responsibilities include careful job planning that aligns with plant productivity targets/metrics, product quality management, directing and leading the work of a team of 12 machine operators and Swiss-Style CNC Machinists, and partnering with leaders of other plant departments.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide direct management, guidance, and leadership to the Machining team members on all shifts, ensuring they excel at their tasks and meet operational productivity targets.
  2. Inspect work throughout the day to verify production standards and quality expectations are met.
  3. Optimize the capabilities of all metal machining equipment such as break press, punch press, and CNC machines (Tsugami multi-axis Swiss-style, Doosan, & Haas), schedule and oversee preventative maintenance, and identify new equipment and tooling to improve productivity and reduce downtime.
  4. Ensure the manufacturing area is free from safety hazards and environmental risks, with all employees adhering to safety, environmental, and health standards.
  5. Seek out new methods or opportunities to increase productivity and improve equipment effectiveness.
  6. Ensure on-time production of parts to meet customer delivery commitments.
  7. Focus on eliminating unplanned scrap and ensuring no non-conforming parts proceed in the manufacturing process.
  8. Provide input on the design and installation of equipment for new manufacturing processes.
  9. Ensure adherence to process control procedures, operating instructions, and all quality control instructions.
  10. Develop long- and short-term strategies for continuous improvement of manufacturing functions.
  11. Control quality, delivery, production costs, work-in-process levels, and monitor production planning.
  12. Recommend and purchase new equipment for expansion, efficiency, cost reduction, or quality improvement.
  13. Maintain and promote a positive team environment, motivating the workforce.
  14. Control manufacturing costs, work-in-process inventory, and throughput.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Prior experience in metal machining manufacturing with supervision or management roles.
  • Experience with CNC, punch machines, and saw machines.
  • Ability to develop, execute, and deliver results according to action plans.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including off-shifts and weekends, as needed.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and effective in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strategic vision for integrating new and future manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience with 6S implementation and management.

Experience & Education:

  • Preferably 4+ years of Canadian manufacturing operations experience.
  • Training or experience in manufacturing processes, supervision, and operations management.
  • Certification in Continuous Improvement, Lean Manufacturing, and Six Sigma.
