Job summary

Porter Airlines Inc. is seeking a Team Lead, Payroll to oversee daily payroll operations and ensure compliance with policies and statutory requirements. The role covers Canadian and U.S.

payroll cycles, including off-cycle processing, audits, and reporting. You will mentor the payroll team, implement best practices, and liaise with service providers as needed. The ideal candidate has a post-secondary diploma, 5–7 years of payroll experience, and relevant designations (PCP, PLP in progress).

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • 5–7 years payroll processing experience.
  • PCP designation preferred; PLP designation or in progress.
  • Avanti Software experience is an asset.
  • Strong discretion and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain updated payroll documentation, workflow and procedures.
  • Implement payroll best practices and improve efficiency.
  • Manage end-to-end Canadian and U.S. payroll cycles, including off-cycle.
  • Review payroll reports and audits for accuracy and completeness.
  • Support payroll-related reporting and provide data insights to stakeholders.
  • Assist with year-end activities and regulatory reporting.
  • Train and lead payroll teams on day-to-day tasks.

Job description

The Team Lead, Payroll will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Payroll Department including the processing of multiple payrolls. They will monitor compliance with approved policies and procedures in relation to Payroll legislative and statutory compliance as well as collective agreement requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Manage and respond to team member payroll inbox inquiries in a prompt and professional manner, providing guidance on payroll policies and procedures
  • Maintain current and updated payroll documentation, workflow and work procedures.
  • Implement payroll best practices and enhance efficiency
  • Keep up-to-date regarding legislation of the various courts for garnishees, educate and counsel team members of legislative standards and answer any inquiries related to such.
  • Responsible for the payroll process and the maintenance of payroll information, such as new hires, terminations, leave of absence, benefit deductions, garnishments etc., gross to net calculation, audit and balancing
  • Manage end-to-end Canadian and U.S. payroll cycles, including off-cycle
  • Review payroll reports and audit outputs to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Support payroll-related reporting and provide data insights to internal stakeholders as needed
  • Assist with year-end activities, audits, and regulatory reporting
  • Train and lead Payroll teams on day-to-day tasks; ensure cross-training
  • Support cost savings initiatives and operating efficiencies within the payroll department
  • Liaise with service providers, research and resolve problems
  • Calculate, enter and monitor programs such as, RRSP/DPSP, Taxable Benefits, EPSP, etc. in collaboration with other members of the People and Culture team.
  • Actively participate in Porter’s Safety Management System (SMS) including reporting hazards and incidents encountered in daily operations; understand, comply and promote the Company Safety Policy

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary diploma or equivalent work experience
  • 5-7 years of work experience in payroll processing
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation
  • Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) designation or in progress
  • Avanti Software experience an asset
  • Detail oriented and a proven self-starter
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task in a high volume environment
  • Able to work autonomously while possessing strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Strong computer skills, experience using Google and/or Microsoft Office products
