Job summary

Job Description

We're looking for a detail-oriented and organized System Admin Field Support Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing new Canadian Forces IT infrastructure to ensure seamless operations across the organization. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, technical expertise, and a commitment to delivering efficient solutions that support combat effectiveness, continuity and security.

Successful candidates will be required to travel domestically an average of one week per quarter, and internationally for a minimum of 8 consecutive weeks per year.

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and maintain Windows and/or Linux servers, ensuring optimal performance and uptime.
  • Administer user accounts, access controls, and permissions using Active Directory and related systems.
  • Monitor system performance, analyze logs, and troubleshoot technical issues with efficiency and precision.
  • Implement and maintain backup and disaster recovery procedures to protect critical data.
  • Install, configure, and update software, hardware, and system patches in a timely manner.
  • Manage IT ticketing systems and document all system changes and configurations.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to end-users regarding system access and functionality.
  • Collaborate with IT team members to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with IT security policies and best practices across all systems.
  • Perform capacity planning and make recommendations for infrastructure upgrades.
  • Able to operate effectively in both conventional office/laboratory settings as well as austere field environments, supporting Army IT networks and infrastructure in Canada and on forward deployments in Latvia, including systems deployed within armoured vehicles and mobile platforms.
  • Be willing to work non-traditional hours, sometimes outside in diverse weather conditions.
Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of Canadian military service (Reg Force or Reserves) and/or 1 year of professional experience in direct support of the Canadian Armed Forces.
  • 3+ years of hands‑on system administration experience.
  • Successful completion of a 2-year post‑secondary certificate or diploma in a related field of study, or equivalent training.
  • Proficiency in Windows and/or Linux server administration.
  • Strong knowledge of Active Directory management and user provisioning.
  • Experience with backup and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Familiarity with IT ticketing and asset management systems.
  • Solid understanding of network administration fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical abilities.
  • Able to travel domestically an average of one week per quarter, and internationally for a minimum of 8 consecutive weeks per year.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies (Hyper‑V, VMware).
  • Scripting and automation experience (PowerShell, Bash).
  • Understanding of IT security best practices and compliance standards.
  • Previous help desk or technical support experience.
  • Experience with monitoring and management tools.
Security Clearance Requirements

Must be a Canadian citizen who is able to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Secret Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment.
