Job summary

Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital is seeking a Surgical Service Technician in the Medical Device Reprocessing Department to decontaminate, clean, assemble, sterilize and distribute surgical instruments and devices in accordance with CSA guidelines and hospital policies.

The role supports QA, preventative maintenance and workflow coordination to ensure sterile supplies are available for the Operating Room, with emphasis on safety and infection control.

Qualifications

• Sterile processing certification required.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience in Medical Device Reprocessing preferred.
• Experience in a Health Care setting preferred.
• Knowledge of cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, inspecting, testing and packaging of instrumentation is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Performs decontamination and high-level disinfection and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical devices in accordance with CSA standards, manufacturer instructions, and departmental policies.
• Reprocesses and ensures decontamination of devices according to their risk class and/or the manufacturers recommendations.
• Decontamination of complex devices
• Reassembles and performs functionality testing of complex devices.
• Sets up instrument trays for minor and major operating procedures.
• Sterilizes devices according to their risk class and/or manufacturers recommendations.
• Operates sterilization equipment according to manufacturer’s standards
• Performs case picking for operational procedures according to CSA standards.
• Organizes daily transactions with the Operating Room and MDRD within the Sterile Core.
• Performs cleaning, monitoring, documenting and maintenance requirements and preparing mechanical equipment for operation in assigned area.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with infection prevention and control and occupational health and safety standards.
• Assists in the orientation and training of new team members.
• Ensures the individual work area is kept to proper sanitation standards.
• Identifies opportunities for process improvements and participates in quality improvement and efficiency initiatives.
• Reports unsafe conditions, equipment issues, or supply concerns to the supervisor or designate
• Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures and safety standards, including quality assurance and regulatory requirements.
• Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor of MDRD or designate

Job description

Department: Medical Device Reprocessing Department

The Surgical Service Technician in the Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD) is responsible for the safe and effective decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical devices. Working in accordance with Canadian Standards Association (CSA) guidelines, infection prevention and control practices, manufacturer recommendations, and Hospital policies, the Technician supports the delivery of safe patient care.

The role contributes to quality assurance, preventative maintenance, and workflow coordination to ensure timely availability of sterile supplies for clinical areas, including the Operating Room.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications

Education

• Sterile Supply Processing Certificate, MDRAO, or CAMDR sterile processing certification required.
• Successful completion of a recognized community college program (with required practicum) for Medical Device Reprocessing preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology is an asset.

Experience

• Minimum two (2) years of experience working in Medical Device Reprocessing preferred.
• Previous experience in a Health Care setting preferred.
• Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, inspecting, testing and packaging of instrumentation is an asset.
• Working knowledge of infection control is an asset.
