Job summary

Dawson Civil is seeking an experienced Superintendent of Civil to lead on-site operations in Kamloops, BC. The role reports to the Project Manager and covers safety, quality, utilities, traffic management, and handover to the client. Travel across BC may be required as projects dictate.

The successful candidate will lead pipe foremen and crews, coordinate with stakeholders, and ensure compliance with MMCD and design specifications while maintaining schedules and budgets.

Job description

Dawson Civil is looking for a Superintendent of Civil who will be on site to lead projects, ensuring smooth operations and successful completion.

In this role you will be a valued member of Dawson Civil, working in a seasonal full-time position of Superintendent, Civil reporting to the Project Manager. The Superintendent Civil will be responsible for all onsite facets of the civil construction project including; safety, quality, existing utility location and management, traffic management, construction of deep and shallow utilities, roadworks, cleanup, and commissioning and handover to the client. Your base location will be Kamloops, B.C. and will require some travel throughout our great province depending on where the projects are.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • Prioritize safety of self and others in every aspect of the job
  • Provide management and direction to pipe foremen and crews
  • A strong knowledge of the Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD)
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to ensure schedules and budgets are being met
  • Knowledge of all types of heavy equipment
  • Attend and participate in all safety meetings and ensure team abides by safety policies on the work site
  • Assist in coordinating and conducting training sessions
  • Read and interpret project plans and specifications, and ensure all employees have the information required
  • Recommend ways to improve production, quality, and crew performance
  • Ensure construction meets approved design specifications, drawings, and applicable codes
  • Provide expertise on all pipelaying methods and processes
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 10+ years of heavy civil and/or highway construction experience, including at least 5 years in a Superintendent, General Superintendent, or equivalent senior field-supervision role.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering public-sector highway and civil infrastructure projects under BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) and/or MMCD specifications.
  • Proven ability to lead and coordinate large, multi-discipline field crews, including direct supervision of crews of 10+ personnel as well as subcontractors, suppliers, and specialty trades.
  • Strong working knowledge of British Columbia construction safety requirements, including WorkSafeBC regulations, Prime Contractor responsibilities, project-specific safety requirements.
  • Strong ability to interpret and execute work in accordance with contract drawings, specifications, special provisions, construction standards. A formal engineering background is not required; practical construction knowledge and sound field judgment are essential.
  • Strong understanding of project costs, production, and scheduling, including labour and equipment productivity, cost-code performance, budget impacts, sequencing, short-interval planning, look-ahead schedules, and identifying schedule or cost risks before they materially affect the project.
  • Demonstrated understanding of construction scheduling, production planning, cost control, force-account tracking, quantity reporting, and daily field documentation, with the discipline to maintain complete and auditable project records.
  • Ability to verify and document crew competency, qualifications, equipment utilization, subcontractor activities, and project progress, recognizing that the Ministry Representative may request supporting information at any time.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with field crews, supervisors, subcontractors, consultants, the Ministry Representative, clients, and Dawson management.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify field risks early, resolve construction issues, maintain productivity, and escalating contractual or technical issues appropriately while keeping the project moving safely and efficiently.
