Job summary

Elexicon Energy Inc. in Whitby, Ontario, is seeking a Co-op Student to support Substation Technicians in maintenance, testing, inspection and troubleshooting of electrical substation equipment while gaining practical utility industry experience.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated interest in electrical power systems and the electrical utility industry.
• Strong willingness to learn and accept direction from experienced personnel.
• Good communication and organizational skills.
• Good knowledge of safety rules and safe work practices.
• Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
• Ability to work around energized electrical equipment while maintaining strict safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Be familiar with safe work practices per IHSA, OHSA and company standards.
• Assist Substation Technicians with operation, inspection, maintenance and construction tasks.
• Gain exposure to low, medium and high voltage equipment.
• Assist with planned maintenance activities, inspections, testing and documentation.
• Support preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
• Assist in maintenance and testing of transformers, switchgear, breakers, disconnects and batteries.
• Read and interpret schematics, single-line diagrams and equipment drawings.
• Perform routine housekeeping to keep a clean work environment.
• Understand isolation, grounding and bonding techniques and safety procedures.
• Travel within jurisdiction to respond to emergency trouble calls and alarms.
