Job summary

Southland Trailer Corp is seeking a Student Welder to join our manufacturing team in Alberta. You will learn welding fundamentals, assist with welding tasks under experienced supervision, and help prepare materials while following safety and quality guidelines.

We’re looking for motivated high school students interested in welding, with basic math skills and a willingness to learn in a hands-on environment.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in high school and taking a welding course or interested in welding.
  • Willingness to pursue a welding apprenticeship and obtain a blue book.
  • Ability to follow 5S and LEAN manufacturing principles (training provided).
  • Basic math and ability to understand simple written instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in an early morning team huddle.
  • Learn to prepare materials and equipment for welding projects.
  • Assist with simple welding tasks under supervision.
  • Safely use hand and power tools with training and supervision.
  • Assist with measuring materials to meet project requirements.
  • Observe welds to understand quality standards.
  • Work in different positions while assisting welding and fabrication tasks.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized per 5S practices.
  • Follow instructions and standard operating procedures for safe, consistent results.
  • Communicate with supervisor or mentor when issues arise.
  • Participate in on-the-job training to improve welding skills.
  • Support team to help keep production moving smoothly.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Student Welder to join our team and help take Southland Trailers to the next level. In this role, you’ll be part of a dynamic team that works together to drive innovation, quality, and success. If you’re a self-starter who loves challenges, we want to hear from you!

What We’re Looking For
  • Currently enrolled in high school (Grade 10, 11, or 12) and participating in, or interested in, a welding course.
  • Eager to learn and develop welding skills in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
  • Interest in pursuing a welding apprenticeship and obtaining a valid blue book.
  • Willingness to follow 5S and LEAN manufacturing principles (training provided).
  • Basic mechanical skills and the ability to safely use hand and power tools (training provided).
  • Physical ability to lift, push, pull, and position materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to understand simple written instructions and perform basic math calculations.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive attitude for working with team members and supervisors.
What You’ll Do
  • Start your day with an early morning team huddle/stretch to get ready for the work ahead.
  • Learn how to prepare materials and equipment for welding projects.
  • Assist with simple welding tasks under the guidance of experienced team members.
  • Practice safe use of hand and power tools (such as grinders, drills, and plasma cutters) with supervision.
  • Help measure and check materials to ensure they meet project requirements.
  • Learn to examine welds and understand what good quality looks like.
  • Work in different positions (bend, squat, kneel, and stand) while helping with welding and fabrication tasks.
  • Keep your work area clean and organized by following daily 5S housekeeping practices.
  • Follow instructions and standard operating procedures to ensure safe, consistent results.
  • Communicate with your supervisor or mentor if you notice an issue or have a question.
  • Take part in on-the-job training to improve your welding skills and knowledge.
  • Support your team by assisting wherever needed to keep production moving smoothly.
