Job summary

Bird Construction is seeking a Student Estimator for a 4- or 8-month co-op based in Edmonton, Alberta. You will work with the estimating team to review plans, perform take-offs, and prepare cost estimates for bids, with mentorship from senior estimators and project managers.

You should be enrolled in a related degree program with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and be able to adapt to changing environments while building strong relationships. Residency or valid work permit is required.

Responsibilities

  • Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand project scope and requirements.
  • Conduct take-offs from project drawings and develop material and labor quantity estimates.
  • Utilize estimating software and tools to prepare detailed cost estimates, including labor, materials, subcontractor quotes, and other project costs.
  • Assist in the preparation of bid proposals, including organizing and compiling all relevant estimating information.
  • Collaborate with senior estimators and project managers to review bids and proposals for accuracy and competitiveness.
  • Assist in maintaining cost databases, historical data, and estimating resources for consistency.
  • Support the estimating team in tracking and reporting on project bids, opportunities, and market trends.
  • Participate in departmental and project meetings to provide input on estimating matters.

Job description

Student Estimator

Our internships and Co-ops are designed to provide you with a business relevant project that will allow you to independently manage your own area of responsibility, while receiving support from an assigned Supervisor and Technical Mentor. We'll help you discover your strengths and development areas in a challenging, fun, and supportive work environment.

We are seeking a student to join us for a 4 or 8 month co-op position starting in January 2027. This position will be based out of Edmonton, Alberta.

What You Will Be Working On
  • Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to gain an understanding of project scope and requirements.
  • Conduct take-offs from project drawings and develop material and labor quantity estimates.
  • Utilize estimating software and tools to prepare detailed cost estimates, including labor, materials, subcontractor quotes, and other project costs.
  • Assist in the preparation of bid proposals, including organizing and compiling all relevant estimating information.
  • Collaborate with senior estimators and project managers to review and analyze bids and proposals for accuracy and competitiveness.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating cost databases, historical data, and estimating resources to ensure accuracy and consistency in estimating practices.
  • Support the estimating team in tracking and reporting on project bids, opportunities, and market trends.
  • Participate in departmental and project meetings to provide input and support on estimating-related matters.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, construction technologies, and best practices in estimating.

  • You are currently enrolled in a relevant degree program such as Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent program.
  • You will complete at least one more semester of education following your internship and possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
