Job summary

Hydro Ottawa is seeking a Distribution Short-Term Planning Engineer to drive near-term capacity, reliability, and customer integration for the distribution system. You will oversee tactical connection planning, DER assessments, and capital execution with data-driven decisions aligned to regulatory standards.

The role offers guidance to field teams, opportunity to influence grid modernization, and potential after-hours responsibilities under the EERP.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
• Professional Engineer license in Ontario or eligibility to obtain one.
• Hands-on experience in customer connection management and short-term utility execution.
• Proficiency with CYME, PiVision, and GIS is a strong operational asset.
• Knowledge of Ontario energy sector distribution codes (DSC, DERCP) is beneficial.
• Experience with Enterprise Asset Management/ERP systems is an asset.
• Lean Six Sigma or other continuous improvement frameworks are assets.
• Strong computer skills, including Google Workspace.

Responsibilities

• Execute capacity checks, large load inquiries, city circulations and new customer design reviews for grid integration.
• Perform Detailed Engineering Assessments and Connection Impact Assessments for DERs.
• Issue Planning Directives to manage safe, reliable operation of the distribution system.
• Support the current-year capital projects process through energization and project handover.
• Advance the technical workflow for connections and internal data quality assurance.
• Provide technical support to field operations and investigate system deficiencies.
• Identify gaps and trends (e.g., EV adoption) to improve load forecasting.
• Develop and maintain local engineering standards and guidelines.
• Represent Hydro Ottawa at external groups and conferences.
