Job summary

Affirm is seeking a Staff Cost Engineer to lead cost governance across a multi-cloud and multi-AI-vendor footprint. You’ll design tooling and automation to make spend understandable and actionable, partnering with finance, infra, and data teams.

The role emphasizes scale, self-service, and cost visibility across AWS and other platforms. You will influence cost strategy, own technical direction, and turn ambiguous spend questions into durable systems.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience with AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes for distributed systems.
• Experience with FinOps or cost-visibility platforms and building dashboards/reports.
• Experience building automation or tooling (Python, Terraform) for self-service cost management.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team over a year-long horizon.
• Collaborate across product management, design & analytics to ensure sustainability and trade-offs are understood.
• Advocate technical solutions and operational processes to multiply team impact.
• Own team operations, monitoring, triage, runbooks, testing and alerting to keep systems reliable.
• Set code and design standards and promote them beyond the team.
• Develop talent by giving feedback and guidance, leading by example.
