Job summary

Suncor Energy Inc. in Fort McMurray, Alberta is seeking a Rotating Equipment Engineer. You will support extraction and tailings operations, lead reliability improvement efforts, and collaborate with Operations and Maintenance to address equipment threats.

Relocation assistance is provided. The role emphasizes continuous improvement, root cause failure analysis, and cost-effective repairs within a 40-hour work week at a Baseplant location.

Qualifications

  • 10 years of hands-on engineering experience with machinery or material handling systems.
  • Experience in reliability management tools such as FMEA, RCM, and RCFA.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings (PFDs, P&ID, GAs).
  • Knowledge of engineers' software: Microsoft Office and SAP.
  • Machinery diagnostics experience with System 1 and Prognost.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the asset care of rotating equipment at Baseplant.
  • Provide technical leadership to troubleshoot complex reliability issues and guide repairs.
  • Improve asset strategies by working with maintenance, planners, and operations.
  • Use risk review methods and MOC to improve safety and reliability metrics.
  • Lead the engineering design of minor plant and equipment modifications.
  • Develop and oversee improvements to rotating equipment reliability and availability.
  • Prepare work scopes and coordinate complex repairs such as overhauls.

Minimum Requirements
  • 10 years of hands‑on engineering experience with machinery or material handling systems
  • Experience in reliability management tools such as failure mode effect and analysis (FMEA), reliability centered maintenance (RCM), and root cause failure analysis (RCFA)
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and SAP
  • Knowledge and expertise in centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, centrifugal and PD pumps, turbines and T&T valves, crushers, conveyors, sizers, and mechanical seals
  • API 682 and API seal piping plans
  • Machinery diagnostics experience in System 1 and Prognost
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings such as PFD’s, P&ID’s, GA’s, piping isometrics, etc. is mandatory
  • A valid driver's licence
Responsibilities
  • Manage the asset care of rotating equipment at Baseplant
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to troubleshoot and investigate complex reliability issues with rotating equipment and provide operations and maintenance teams with necessary direction for repairs
  • Improve existing asset strategies by working closely with maintenance, planners, and operations on reliability issues and failure trends, while refining condition monitoring programs
  • Use risk review approaches, hazard and operability studies, management of change process to maintain and improve area safety and reliability performance indicators
  • Lead the engineering design of minor plant and equipment modifications.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee improvements to continuously improve rotating equipment reliability and availability
  • Use technical knowledge and project management skills to prepare work scopes and coordinate complex repairs such as equipment overhauls and maintenance projects
Location and other Key Details

This position is located at Suncor Base plant location in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs.

If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided.

Our engineering roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based on years of experience and scope of work.
