Position Description

Are you seeking a hybrid opportunity working in a fast, team-based, multi-disciplined environment, while collaborating with others and supporting the navy, coast guard, and commercial customer? Serco has a great opportunity for you! This position is located in Victoria, British Columbia.

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Good or higher).

The Sr. Naval Architect works with less experienced and more experienced technical staff to which the individual is assigned and applies basic knowledge of naval architecture to perform routine analyses and prepare basic naval architectural deliverables in support of the design of ships, craft, and other floating structures.

You will be part of a member team or leading a team working for a Ship Design Manager or Engineering Manager designing ships, or ship systems and working closely with the customer and other Serco teams. You could also be assigned to In Service Support programs of a ship or submarine where you will be required to develop engineering specifications for refits and modernization as well as provide engineering support for resolving queries from the production teams for the client. You will apply basic naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards, and will use naval architecture tools and software to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas.

In this role you will:

  • Apply basic naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas:
    • Development and validation of design and engineering requirements, preparation of specifications, and provides inputs to technical reports and presentations.
    • Provide hull form and hydrodynamic performance, including development of hull form geometry and lines plans, hydrostatics and curves of form, resistance and powering estimates, propulsor design and performance, appendage design, maneuvering analyses, seakeeping analyses, development of model test plans and observing and analyzing data from model tests or full scale trials.
    • Provide weight and stability analyses, including development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses, performance of deadweight surveys and inclining experiments.
    • Provide concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimization.
    • Perform design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters.
    • Perform structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings in accordance with appropriate rules or design standards, development of superstructure, mast, and local support structure to withstand primary and secondary loads.
    • Make general arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints, performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops.
    • Assist with the review of design proposals and specifications.
    • Participate in or lead scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.
    • Prepare documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.
    • Prepare and present formal briefings and staff seminars.
    • Train, guide and mentor more junior naval architects and technical staff.
    • Comply with all corporate policies and procedures, including quality assurance and security procedures, in the performance of duties.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or related Engineering field such as Ocean Engineering, or equivalent in training and a minimum of 10 years extensive experience in Ship and Submarine maintenance and repair. (In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 5 years applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.)
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Good or higher). (Canadian Citizenship/Permanent Resident Status is required.)
  • A Professional Engineer’s designation is required.
  • Experience deriving maintenance and repair requirements to ensure structural design intent is maintained.
  • Ability to pay cognizance of platform operating cycle is required.
  • Experience performing structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings is required.
  • Experience performing design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines is required.
  • Understanding and specifications of the following is required:
    • Fabrication of repair solutions
    • Welding Techniques
    • Suitable NDE techniques and limitations
    • Preservation coatings and technologies
    • Active and passive galvanic/cathodic protection
    • Non-metallic and composite technologies
    • Includes cumulative assessment and trend analysis of new and existing structural concessions, defects and repairs.
  • Travel may be required up to 10%.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have basic naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas.

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Current active Reliability Status clearance.
  • Ship repair experience.
  • Submarine knowledge.
  • Ship building or ship design experience.
  • DND Org knowledge.
  • Def Stans.
  • Class background.
