J.L. Richards & Associates Limited (JLR) invites a seasoned Specification Writer to join our Project Delivery group in northern Ontario.

The role offers scope to lead specification writing, coordinate with design professionals, and advance master specifications across education, healthcare, science and technology, commercial, and mining projects. As a mentor-led, employee-owned practice, we value initiative, collaboration, and delivering world-class solutions that support community growth.

Qualifications

• 10 years of experience in construction, architectural or engineering fields.
• Strong knowledge of specification writing, contract administration, and architectural or engineering design.
• Progress toward or obtained Registered Specification Writer or Certified Specification Practitioner credentials.
• Ability to lead standardization of specifications within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Write and edit specifications for projects, ensuring compliance with standards, guidelines, and laws.
• Translate project design requirements into materials, methods, and installations.
• Develop and update Master Specifications and National Master Specification (NMS).
• Prepare specifications for education, healthcare, science and technology, commercial, industrial, mining and interior design projects.
• Implement digital specification tools to streamline production.
• Develop tips and best practices to share with project teams.

Your Role as a Specification Writer:

Choose your own adventure! Let's talk about how your skills, experience, goals, and passions can find a home at JLR. As the Specification Writer, your role will include:

• Writing and editing specifications for projects and coordinating compliance with project requirements, institutional guidelines, JLR standards, technical conditions, acceptable standards, and existing laws, contracts, regulations, and codes.
• Translating project design requirements into materials, methods, equipment, procedures, and installations necessary to provide the narrative descriptions.
• Developing and updating JLR's Master Specifications and National Master Specification (NMS) to ensure that they meet industry best practices and lessons learned.
• Working alongside other senior design professionals to prepare specifications for a variety of complex projects and building types that include education, healthcare, science and technology, commercial, industrial, mining and interior design initiatives.
• Implementing digital specification tools to streamline the production of project specifications.
• Developing tips and best practices that can be shared with project teams to improve specifications.
