Job summary

Calgary Airports is seeking a Safety, Health & Compliance professional to lead OH&S programs for regulatory compliance and emergency response. You will develop, implement and maintain safety policy documentation, drive training and conduct field inspections.

The role requires experience in regulated environments and strong writing skills. You’ll work in a hybrid team with in-office presence and provide leadership for safety initiatives across the Calgary International and Springbank Airports.

Qualifications

  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain RAIC; check RAIC program information.
  • Post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, Aviation Safety, Industrial Safety or closely related discipline.
  • 4–6 years of experience developing safety programs, policies, procedures, manuals and training documentation in a regulated environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation, Canada Labour Code Part II, and Criminal Code provisions; interpret/apply requirements.
  • Exceptional technical writing skills for policies, procedures, manuals, standards and regulatory submissions.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and document management systems with revision tracking.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement to gather information, build consensus, and resolve safety issues.
  • Ability to conduct field inspections/site visits in operational/construction environments.
  • Role includes driving; provide valid Class 5 license and driving abstract during hiring.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, evaluate and improve OH&S, safety programs and trainings to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Review legislation and regulatory documents to identify compliance gaps and risks.
  • Develop corrective actions, controls, metrics and standardized work practices to reduce risk.
  • Develop AVOP operating standards, training materials, exams and driving assessments.
  • Draft clear policies, standards, manuals, procedures and guidance documents.
  • Apply document governance: version control, retention, approvals, accessibility.
  • Deliver safety training across classroom, virtual and field formats.
  • Consult with employees, contractors and regulators to identify hazards and resolve issues.

Work environment: Hybrid (3 days in office, 2 days WFH). Employees must be available to work in the office up to five (5) days per week when required to support business priorities.

What’s The Team Like

The Safety, Security, Compliance, and Emergency Response team ensures the safe and secure operation of Calgary International and Springbank Airports. This team plays a critical role in regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, and operational assurance, directly impacting the airports’ efficiency and safety. Their work supports the strategic goals of the organization and ensures a safe environment for all stakeholders.

What Are Some Of The Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, evaluate and improve OH&S, Contractor Safety, Airside Safety, AVOP, Safety Management System, investigation and risk assessment programs to meet legislative, regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Review legislation, airport operating regulations, Transport Canada requirements, audit findings, incident trends and risk information to identify compliance gaps, emerging risks and priorities for program improvement.
  • Develop corrective actions, procedural controls, inspection requirements, program metrics and standardized work practices that reduce risk and strengthen compliance.
  • Develop and maintain AVOP operating standards, training materials, study resources, written examinations, practical driving assessments and competency criteria used to determine operator readiness.
  • Write and publish clear policies, standards, manuals, procedures, work instructions, forms, training materials and guidance documents that translate complex requirements into practical direction.
  • Apply document governance requirements, including version control, revision tracking, records retention, approval workflows, accessibility and template standards, so users can access current approved documents.
  • Develop and deliver classroom, virtual and field-based safety training; assess participant understanding through testing, demonstrations and practical competency verification.
  • Consult with employees, contractors, leaders, safety committees and regulators to identify hazards, clarify requirements and recommend practical, risk-based resolutions.
What Do You Need To Bring

  • Post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, Aviation Safety, Industrial Safety or a closely related discipline. Relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • 4-6 years of experience developing safety programs, policies, procedures, operational manuals and training documentation in a regulated environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation (applicable section), Canada Labour Code Part II, and applicable Criminal Code provisions, with the ability to interpret and apply workplace health and safety requirements in an operational environment.
  • Exceptional technical writing skills with the ability to produce policies, procedures, manuals, standards, training materials, regulatory submissions and operational guidance documents that are clear, accurate, and technically sound.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and document management systems, including technical publishing, advanced formatting, revision tracking and version control.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to obtain information from multiple sources, challenge assumptions, build consensus, and facilitate resolution of safety-related issues.
  • Ability to conduct field inspections, site visits, investigations and workplace observations in operational and construction environments.
  • This role includes driving as part of its duties; therefore, candidates will be required to provide a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract as part of the hiring process.

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or progress toward a comparable designation.
