Job summary

Nutrien seeks a collaborative Process Safety Engineer to lead PHA facilitation and risk-management initiatives across multiple sites, including Deerfield, Saskatoon or Calgary offices.

The role requires 12+ years in process safety, a BA/BS in chemical or mechanical engineering, and hands-on experience with PHAPro, SAP, BowTieXP, PHAST or Safeti. You will mentor others and drive continuous improvement of safety standards.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide Process Hazard Analysis facilitation services and coaching to Nutrien sites.
  • Maintain up-to-date schedules of PHA revalidations across sites.
  • Test and improve process safety practices and standards.
  • Provide process safety engineering advice for practical risk solutions.
  • Keep current on industry codes, standards and best practices.
  • Participate in Process Safety Management audits and risk assessments.
  • Support development and delivery of process safety training.
  • Monitor KPIs and investigate safety events as required.
  • Mentor junior engineers and guide other functions on risk literacy.
  • Lead change initiatives to improve safety standards.

We are seeking a collaborative and driven process safety professional who values diversity, teamwork, and shared success. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled and experienced Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) facilitator with deep knowledge of Process Safety Management best practices, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. They will possess strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities to support equipment and system performance, as well as identify opportunities for program development and continuous improvement. This role requires excellent communication and influencing skills to build alignment and gain buy-in for recommendations across diverse stakeholder groups. Success in this position also depends on the ability to work effectively both independently and within teams.

This position is located at either Nutrien's Deerfield, Illinois, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan or Calgary, Alberta head offices.

What You'll Do
  • Provide Process Hazard Analysis facilitation services, coaching, and advice to Nutrien chemical manufacturing sites and terminals, including preparation and planning, conducting the workshops, supporting management review of findings, completing professional reports on time, and following up on important recommendations.
  • Ensure all sites have an up to date and complete schedule of PHA Revalidations and collaborate with on-site teams to optimize the schedule across many sites.
  • Challenge the status quo and regularly test effectiveness of process safety practices and standards.
  • Provide competent process safety engineering advice and support for sites to develop practical solutions to manage operational risk.
  • Keep current on industry best practice, interpret codes and standards changes, and facilitate the sharing of best practices among the operating sites.
  • Participate in Process Safety Management audits and conduct assessments on specific risk management processes such as management of change and pre-start up safety review.
  • Support the development and delivery of process safety training.
  • Monitor process safety key performance indicators, identify trends, surface risks & support risk assessments, as well as process safety event investigations as required.
  • Mentor less experienced process safety engineers and guide other functions and engineering disciplines to improve risk literacy and process hazard awareness.
  • Lead change initiatives and teams to guide the development, planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of process safety standards and best practices, with a depth of understanding of business and organizational impacts of changes.

  • 12+ years in a process safety engineering role, working in an industrial processing environment
  • Background in chemical processing, with anhydrous ammonia experience considered an asset
  • Experience with PHAPro, SAP, Microsoft Excel, Word, Visio
  • Experience with BowTieXP, PHAST, Safeti considered an asset

  • Extensive knowledge of process safety management best practices, industry standards, and relevant regulations
  • Effectively communicate to achieve a high level of buy in for recommendations from all affected parties, demonstrated influence without positional authority
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team context with excellent time management, organizational skills, and change management.
  • Consequence Modeling, SIL studies, quantitative risk assessment, fire protection engineering experience considered an asset
Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this role, in Deerfield, Illinois, is between $110,400 - $173,470 USD per year. While we provide this range as general guidance, several factors are taken into consideration when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, candidate skill set, experience and training, licensure and certifications, work location, and other business and organizational needs. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.

We provide an attractive benefits package that includes comprehensive medical, dental, vision coverage, and life insurance and well as disability coverage for positions working more than 30 hours per week. In addition, we have a retirement program that encourages our employees to save for the longer term, with generous matching employer contributions. In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our program(s) where discretionary pay out of awards is reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.
