Specialist Engineer – Rotating Equipment Carseland, Alberta | Global Asset Integrity Role
About The Role – 37342 - SPECIALIST ENGINEER - ROTATING EQUIPMENT (Carseland, Alberta, Canada)

We are seeking a Specialist Engineer - Rotating Equipment to join Orica's Global Specialist Asset Integrity team. This is a senior, high-impact engineering role responsible for protecting and optimizing critical rotating equipment and turbomachinery across our Canadian and North American manufacturing network.

This role requires more than technical depth. The successful candidate will be expected to lead through influence, communicate clearly with site leadership and trades teams, and guide millwrights and maintenance teams through complex machine issues from diagnosis through to resolution.

You will act as a subject matter expert and technical authority, influencing asset lifecycle decisions, improving reliability, and supporting complex troubleshooting efforts across multiple sites and regions.

What you will be doing
  • Provide technical leadership and engineering expertise across the sites rotating equipment and turbomachinery, including lifecycle analysis, troubleshooting, and turnaround support.
  • Lead complex issue resolution by translating operating data into the identification of potential failure modes, determine inspection activities and analyse findings to develop and articulate clear actions for maintenance, operations, vendors, and site leadership.
  • Guide and influence cross-functional teams, including millwrights and site maintenance teams, through equipment integrity issues without direct reporting authority.
  • Define scopes of work, apply technical standards, develop and contribute to inspection/test plans, identification of quality hold points, and overhaul requirements for critical rotating equipment and turbomachinery assets.
  • Apply data-driven engineering insights, including vibration, lubrication, performance, and operating trend analysis, to reduce operational risk and extend asset life.
  • Support global manufacturing sites by improving reliability, performance, and equipment integrity across equipment asset classes including air compressors, steam turbines, expanders and their associated control and management systems.
  • Lead or contribute to benchmarking, innovation initiatives, best-practice development, HAZOPs, LOPAs, functional safety activities, and Communities of Practice.
What you will bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years of heavy industry experience, including 4+ years of hands‑on turbomachinery equipment experience in continuous, process, or heavy manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated ability developing detailed scope of work, contributing to detailed planning processes and executing overhauls on turbomachinery.
  • Demonstrated ability to actively lead technical problem‑solving scenarios on turbomachinery, not only implement solutions developed by others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to and guide non-technical people to make critical business-based decisions.
  • Strong background working with turbomachinery, compressors, steam turbines, pumps, expanders, and their associated auxiliary systems.
  • Working knowledge of Bentley Nevada Machine Monitoring systems.
  • Working knowledge of speed governing and overspeed protection systems.
  • Working knowledge of API/ISO standards, NDE methods, vibration analysis, lubrication systems, thermography, dynamic balancing, and predictive maintenance practices.
  • Ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to non-technical stakeholders and to communicate effectively with trades, operations, vendors, engineers, and senior leaders.
  • Proven ability to operate remotely, manage priorities with limited supervision, whilst keeping stakeholders informed through clear updates on progress, risks, and recommendations.
  • Practical field presence, sound judgement, and the interpersonal credibility to influence teams at site level and across regions.
  • Up to 25% international and domestic travel per year.
  • Travel may include extended turnaround trips, occasionally up to five weeks at a time, to sites in Canada and the United States, with potential travel to Europe or Australia.
  • Primary support locations are Canada and the United States.
  • When not traveling, you will work onsite at Orica's Carseland facility at least three days per week, where feasible.
  • This role provides technical guidance and influence across teams but does not currently have direct reports.

Important candidate fit: This position is best suited for someone who can be the hands‑on technical lead in the room, build trust with site teams, and take ownership of complex rotating equipment issues from initial assessment through resolution, then be able to manage up and keep key stakeholders informed at the same time. The person should possess an understanding of the whole asset lifecycle with experience in operations and maintenance of rotating and turbomachinery.
