Job summary

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a post secondary educational assistant program (normally one year), or equivalent, plus a minimum of one year experience working with children.
• Relevant additional training is an asset.
• Ability and willingness to perform required physical tasks, including toileting and lifting.
• A positive and empathetic attitude towards students.
• Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information.
• Ability to function independently within the framework of a team; and
• Basic knowledge in the use of computer software.

Responsibilities

• Aid the children in the transition from home to school;
• Act as a liaison between students and the teacher;
• Attend meetings, take notes, and assist in lesson or project delivery for special needs students;
• Create and design crafts, charts and teaching materials under the teacher's direction;
• Assist in implementing the Individualized Education Plan for special needs students;
• Observe and report on students' behaviour, academic, motor and social development;
• Assist in behaviour management including conflict management and de-escalation;
• Assist special needs students with feeding as required;
• Assist with washroom facilities and changing soiled clothing;
• Maintain routines and rules in the classroom;
• Help plan field trips for special needs students;
• Participate in general school duties and supervise students;
• Provide general classroom support such as copying, displays, materials, and setup of AV equipment;
• Other related duties as assigned.
