Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife is seeking a skilled and compassionate Sonographer to join our Diagnostic Imaging team. In this role, you will independently perform and interpret high-quality ultrasound examinations that directly support timely and accurate diagnoses for patients across the Northwest Territories and the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut.

Stanton is the territorial referral centre, serving approximately 43,000 residents across 1.2 million square kilometers. You will work in a collaborative, supportive team environment alongside Radiologists, Medical Radiation Technologists, CT Technologists, and fellow Sonographers. With approximately 7,000+ ultrasounds performed annually, this role offers a diverse and dynamic scope of practice, including abdominal, obstetrical, cardiac, vascular, pediatric, and small parts imaging, as well as procedural support for biopsies and aspirations.

The incumbent is expected to model and promote a culturally safe, anti-racist, and trauma-informed environment that supports relationship-based care and equitable access to services for Indigenous peoples. This includes demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and respect for diverse worldviews, practices, and customs in all patient interactions.

Working as part of an interdisciplinary Diagnostic Imaging team, the Sonographer conducts a broad range of examinations including adult and pediatric neck, abdomen, pelvis, scrotum, breast, cardiac, deep vein, and obstetrical imaging. The role also includes supporting invasive procedures, maintaining equipment quality control, participating in accreditation processes, and ensuring compliance with NTHSSA policies, Sonography Canada standards, and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Independently perform, interpret, and document high-quality sonographic examinations in accordance with professional standards and departmental procedures
• Provide technical interpretation and communicate findings to Radiologists and referring physicians
• Ensure patients are informed, prepared, and appropriate candidates for examinations
• Review and obtain relevant clinical history prior to examinations
• Accurately document and enter examination data into RIS and PACS systems
• Recognize and communicate abnormal findings to Radiologists or referring physicians
• Provide hands‑on assistance during invasive procedures (e.g., biopsies, aspirations)
• Perform quality control testing, equipment monitoring, troubleshooting, and minor maintenance
• Advocate for patient dignity, autonomy, confidentiality, and culturally safe care
• Participate in accreditation activities and departmental quality initiatives

Key Qualifications

• Knowledge and ability to perform and interpret detailed ultrasound examinations across multiple anatomical regions
• Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and ultrasound physics
• Ability to recognize and document pathological changes
• Skills in operating ultrasound equipment, RIS, and PACS systems
• Highly developed fine‑motor skills and hand‑eye coordination
• Strong communication skills with medical and non‑medical individuals
• Ability to work independently with remote Radiologist supervision

Additional Requirements

• Registration with Sonography Canada is required. The incumbent will be required to authorize the employer to independently verify the registration with Sonography Canada.
• Continuing education is required to maintain the Sonography Canada registration and stay current with the ever‑changing technology (30 hours of continuing sonography education must be completed every three years).
