Job summary

Akamai Technologies in Ottawa, Canada, is seeking a Software Engineer II to develop performant, scalable software and to help manage a global network of production servers. You will collaborate with a skilled product engineering team to upgrade, deploy, and operate our edge platform.

The role covers building backend services with Java, Angular, Spring, NoSQL databases, and containerized architectures; creating CI/CD pipelines; analyzing incidents; and driving automation to reduce manual work.

Qualifications

• 2 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field/experience
• Interest in internet technologies and optimizations
• Experience developing and monitoring backend applications with focus on performance and scale
• Experience with Java, Angular, Spring Framework, NoSQL databases, and containerization
• Scripting languages in Linux/Unix environments (Shell, Bash, Python, Ruby)

Responsibilities

• Collaborating with the product engineering team and/or working group
• Conducting regular Production Error Audits and deep-dive log analysis to detect anomalies
• Designing and implementing tooling to improve debugging, check-listing, and product metrics
• Designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for releases across test, staging, production
• Triaging customer escalations and mitigating product bugs
• Participating as SME in incidents, performing root cause analysis and mitigations
• Fostering continuous process and tooling improvements

As a Software Engineer II at Akamai, you'll be responsible for developing performant and scalable software. You will work with highly-skilled developers to manage the upgrade and deployment of a network of thousands of production servers.

As a Software Engineer II, you will be responsible for:

• Collaborating with the product engineering team and/or working group
• Conducting regular Production Error Audits of operational metrics and deep-dive log analysis to proactively detect anomalies and error conditions
• Designing and implementing software tools that enhance productivity with respect to debugging, check-listing, and product metric analysis
• Designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines that are key to building releases and deploying them to testing, staging, and production environments
• Triaging and analysis of customer escalations related to product operations and behaviour, including the identification, mitigation, and resolution of product bugs
• Participating as a Subject-Matter Expert in Technical Incidents, performing root cause analysis, identifying and executing incident mitigations
• Fostering a culture that strives for consistent, iterative improvement to our processes, strategies, tools and frameworks

To be successful in this role you will:

• Have 2 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field/experience
• Be interested in learning about internet technologies and optimizations
• Have experience developing and monitoring backend applications, such as databases, queuing systems, understanding of system limits and impacts on performance/scale
• Have experience with some technologies like Java, Angular, Spring Framework, NoSQL Databases, Realtime Service Delivery, containerization technologies
• Have expertise with scripting languages in a Linux/Unix environment (eg: shell, Bash, Python, Ruby)
• Be comfortable with basic statistics and an interest in deeper analysis will be an asset
• Be enthusiastic about automation, and build tools to streamline development processes and reduce manual toil

Compensation

Akamai is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The base salary for this position ranges from 82,100 - 147,900 CAD/year; a candidate’s salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of annual bonus or incentives, equity awards and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).
