Job summary

Ross Video is seeking a Software Developer Co-op for Ross Research Labs on our Ottawa Campus (Auriga Drive). The role involves applying curiosity and problem solving to develop proofs of concept and potentially in-product software, including work on Catena, a standardization project for a secure, cloud-scale control plane.

You'll work in a fast-paced, high-tech environment with typical pay rates of $24-$35 per hour, and are expected to be in the office three days a week.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• Linux usage, scripting and basic administration.
• Proficiency in C++, JavaScript, Go, and Rust.
• Familiarity with Git, VS Code, and JIRA.
• Experience with debuggers (gdb, valgrind) and container tech (Docker, Kubernetes).

Responsibilities

• Develop proofs of concept and potentially in-product software at the leading edge.
• Contribute to Catena and related initiatives in Ross Research Labs.

Software Developer Co-op - Ross Research Labs (RRL)

WHERE YOU'LL BE WORKING

Ross Video is a world leader in High Definition Video Production Equipment, designed and manufactured in Canada and sold world-wide. Our products are used by a who's who of the global entertainment industry, including top broadcast networks like NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox in the USA; Rogers, CTV and the CBC in Canada and others around the world from Fiji to Finland and everywhere in between. We are # 1 in providing behind the scenes HD production gear used in Sports Stadiums including places where the Atlanta Falcons, NY Mets, LA Lakers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Bills play. Our equipment was used extensively at the Vancouver 2010 and other Olympic games. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Reporting to the Vice President, Product Security and Ross Research Labs, the successful candidate will use their curiosity, ingenuity and problem-solving skills to develop proofs of concept and potentially in-product software at the leading edge. One example of our output, substantially developed by co-ops is Catena: a major initiative in the Broadcast Industry, led by Ross Video to standardize a control plane that is secure, cloud scale, multi-vendor. The interface definition is hosted by a leading international standards development body, SMPTE here: https://github.com/SMPTE/st2138-a , and the Ross SDKs here: https://github.com/rossvideo/Catena . This position is located at our Ottawa Campus on Auriga Drive and is expected to be in the office 3 days a week. Our pay rates range from $24 - $35 per hour, based on experience.

WHAT YOU KNOW

• Currently enrolled in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering.
• Linux usage, scripting and basic administration
• Computer languages such as C++, Javascript, Go, Rust
• Familiarity with software development environments (Git, vscode, JIRA)
• Debuggers such as gdb, valgrind
• Docker and its daemon, Kubernetes is a big plus
• Networking Protocols: gRPC, HTTP(S), TCP, UDP, IP, Ethernet, RTP, SDP

WHO YOU ARE

  • Can apply divide & conquer techniques to problem solving
  • Can clearly summarize and explain problems and suggest potential solutions
  • Are comfortable asking for help

• Fast learner with ability to use informal resources such as online forums like stack exchange, and AI assistants including ChatGPT and copilot.
