Job summary

Alberta Health Services’ Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary seeks a Social Worker II to join an interdisciplinary team. You will provide psychosocial assessments, counselling, and case management for inpatients and families, with duties including discharge planning and community referrals.

The role supports coverage across Emergency Department, maternity/pediatrics, and other units as needed, in a fast-paced hospital environment. 0.70 FTE, regular part-time hours.

Qualifications

• Completion of bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
• Active or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).
• Experience in an adult acute care setting within last 3 years.
• Experience in the Emergency Department within last 5 years.
• BCLS-HCP certification required.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills to manage a busy workload.
• Recent experience in crisis intervention and working with patients/families facing chronic or life threatening illness.
• Experience with PFCC and Complex Discharge Management.

Your Opportunity

Located in N.E. Calgary, the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) is an acute care hospital offering both inpatient and outpatient services. The PLC has over 600 inpatient beds, including Medical, Surgical, Pediatrics, Women’s Health and Critical Care. The PLC is the Vascular Centre for Southern Alberta, Southwestern Saskatchewan and Southeast British Columbia. Under general supervision from the Social Work Manager, the successful candidate will be expected to provide Social Work services primarily to the Inpatient units and as needed to provide coverage support to Emergency Department, maternity/pediatrics units, critical care, and outpatient clinic areas at the PLC. These services are primarily clinical in nature, and include advanced level assessment and treatment (including, but not limited to psychosocial assessments, counselling, case management and discharge planning). This caseload may change based on operational needs. This position requires the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and yet function as part of the interdisciplinary team. At all times the Social Worker ensures he/she is compliant with ACSW standards of practice.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of bachelor's degree in Social Work.

Additional Required Qualifications

• Relevant experience in an adult acute care setting in last 3 years.


• Relevant experience in the Emergency Department in last 5 years.


• Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification required.


• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with members of the interdisciplinary team, patients and families in a dynamic health care setting.


• Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills.


• Excellent organizational and time management skills to efficiently organize and prioritize workload to keep pace in a busy multi-disciplinary patient care.


• Recent experience in crisis intervention and working with patients/families facing chronic and/or life threatening illness required.


• Experience and advanced skill in providing therapy to individuals and families.


• Experience with Patient and Family Center Care (PFCC) and Complex Discharge Management.


• Solution-focused and able to navigate difficult conversations.


• Able to succeed through high levels of stress, fluctuating priorities, and time sensitive deadlines.


• Able to tolerate long periods of sitting or standing, perform repetitive movements, lift and carry 10-15 lbs., and regularly walk distances up to 3 km per day.
