Job description

Job Title: Skilled Laborer

We are seeking a skilled laborer to join our team specializing in scaffolding services and mechanical insulation. This role supports major projects including the Joint Support Ship (JSS) combat vessel and the Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel. The ideal candidate will have experience in construction trades and be adept at applying, removing, and repairing thermal and acoustical insulation on industrial equipment.

Responsibilities

1. Apply, remove, and repair thermal and acoustical insulation on industrial equipment such as duct piping, heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels.
2. Read and interpret drawings and specifications to determine insulation requirements.
3. Select the appropriate amount and type of insulation and method of securing it, considering the type and shape of the surface, and whether the equipment is hot or cold, inside or outside.
4. Measure and cut insulating material and coverings to required shapes and dimensions, fitting insulation around obstructions or shaping insulation materials and protective coverings.
5. Install vapor barriers and finish insulated surfaces by applying metal cladding, canvas, PVC, or cement.

Essential Skills

• 3+ years in a construction trade (carpentry, sheet metal, installation).
• Proficient in operating hand and power tools.
• Ability to meet security requirements (Permanent Resident or citizen).
• Effective in reading, writing, and speaking English.
• Completion of CSTS (Construction Safety Training System).
• Reliable transportation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in insulation, carpentry, or sheet metal work.
• Strong English communication skills.

Work Environment

Work is conducted at the Seaspan shipyards in North Vancouver. Parking is available on-site but fills up quickly. The team consists of 36 employees, reporting to the Site Superintendent, with one other supervisor and five foremen. Currently, there are three ships being worked on. The shift is Monday to Friday, starting at 5:45am and ending at 4:00pm, with 10-hour days (8 hours regular time, 2 hours overtime).

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.06 - $45.57/hr.
