Job summary

Cambrian College is seeking a Simulation Laboratory Technologist to oversee administration, maintenance, security, and day-to-day operations of the HealthSciences simulation labs. You will educate faculty on simulation technologies and lead development of learning activities.

Ideal candidates have a healthcare or IT background with 2+ years in clinical or educational simulation settings, plus expertise with video/AV equipment and simulators.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, IT, or equivalent combination of training/experience.
  • Minimum two years of related work experience in clinical healthcare and/or educational simulation labs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides faculty technical training and support and implements simulation activities.
  • Supervises students and demonstrates high‑fidelity equipment and simulators’ clinical features.
  • Conducts simulation practice runs and orientations for faculty and students; supports lab activities.
  • Responds to student inquiries and refers to instructors as needed.
  • Operates and monitors student-led simulation sessions.
  • Supports faculty in using simulation equipment, runs operator workstation, and records video for debriefing.
  • Assists faculty to plan simulation days, preparing locations and supplies.
  • Collaborates with faculty to develop, improve and revise simulation activities.
  • Sets up and dismantles simulation scenarios; switches between scenarios as needed.
  • Troubleshoots setup issues and maintains labs/equipment; redeploys supplies as required.
  • Performs routine diagnostic monitoring, preventive maintenance and software updates.
  • Partners with IT and other services to ensure functioning AV equipment and connectivity.
  • Works with vendors and technicians to ensure optimum simulation environment operation.
  • Maintains records of service agreements and warranties; flags expiry/renewal needs.
  • Sources supplies/equipment and supports procurement processes.
  • Ensures procedures align with INACSL and SSH standards; supports interprofessional education.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Job description

This position is responsible for the administration, maintenance, security, and day-to-day operations of the School of HealthSciences simulation labs. The Simulation Laboratory Technologist will be responsiblefor education and training faculty in the use of simulation equipment and the development and implementation of simulation activities. The Simulation Laboratory Technologist has a strong understanding of simulation technologies, healthcare simulation standards of best practice, proven working knowledge of simulated learning and willingness to learn new technologies.

  1. Provides faculty technical training and support and implementation of simulationactivities.
  2. Supervises students and provides technical support in the proper operation of high-fidelity equipment and demonstrates the patient simulators’ clinical features in accordance with lab activities.
  3. Conducts simulation practice runs and orientation to both faculty and students, provides assistance to students and supervises simulation lab activities.
  4. Responds to student inquiries pertaining to simulation matters and related subject material, referring students to instructors as required.
  5. Operates and monitors the flow of student led simulationsessions.
  6. Supports and proactively assists faculty in their use of simulation equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, running the operator workstation and supporting faculty, initiating and providing video recording for debriefing.
  7. Assists faculty to plan simulation days including preparing location and organizingsupplies.
  8. Collaborates with faculty in the development, improvement, and revision of simulationactivities.
  9. Sets up and dismantles simulation scenarios. This may require rapid change-over from one scenario or program to another.
  10. Troubleshoots organizational issues relating to simulation set up, overall maintenance of the labs and equipment,and equipment operations through visual inspection, communications with staff and faculty, and redeployment of equipment/supplies to meet unexpected needs.
  11. Conducts manageable routine diagnostic monitoring, preventive maintenance and repairs as well as software updates.
  12. Partners with the Information Technology (IT) Department and other service areas to ensure optimally functioning of audio-visual equipment, software, and connectivity within simulation spaces.
  13. Works closely with simulation vendor and other external technical experts and maintenance technicians to ensureoptimum operation of the simulation environment for faculty and students.
  14. Maintains records of all equipment service agreements and warranties; bringing forward expiry and renewal requirements on a timely basis.
  15. Sources supplies and equipment and works with the School of Health Sciences leadership on efficient and effective procurement processes.
  16. Ensures laboratory procedures adhere to appropriate professional standards including those established by the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Standards of Best Practice in Simulation and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accreditation standards.
  17. Assists with interprofessional education (IPE) activities across the School of Health Sciences programs.
  18. Performs other duties as required.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, or information technology, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience may be substituted for the required qualifications
  • Minimum two (2) years of related work experience in a clinical healthcare setting and/or simulation laboratory settings in an educational institution
  • Experience with the use of related software and hardware, including video and audio recording equipment
  • Experience operating a variety of simulationequipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the basic tenets of experiential knowledge and adult education.This includes the use of human patient simulators to support clinical practice or transition to practice.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and faculty.
  • Demonstrated experience working in simulation labs with high fidelity equipment such as operating, installing/updating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and programming human patient simulators.
  • Experienced in operating equipment such as computer software applications, audio-visual system, and human patient simulators for classroom instruction and for inventory purposes.
  • Demonstrated creativity and flexibility in setting up realistic lab simulations and designing innovative approaches to solving problems.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize time sensitive tasks while managing a demanding workload and environment.
  • Ability to work variable hours with a minimum ofsupervision.
  • Proficiency and demonstrated skills with Outlook, Word and Excel.
