thyssenkrupp Materials NA, Inc. is seeking a Shunt Truck Driver / Route Planner to safely move trailers and coordinate deliveries within the yard and to customers.

You will serve as a link between shipping, receiving, logistics, drivers, and operations to support on-time performance. The role combines yard operations with transportation planning; a high school diploma and valid license are required, with AZ/Class 1 an asset.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Computer literate and able to use basic software.
  • Experience as Shunt Driver, Yard Driver, Dispatcher, or Route Planner preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial distribution, logistics, or transportation assets.
  • Valid driver's license; AZ/Class 1 license is an asset.
  • Experience operating yard/shunt trucks or tractor-trailers.
  • Knowledge of transportation regulations and scheduling.
  • Familiarity with ERP or fleet management systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Shunt Truck Driver / Route Planner is responsible for the safe movement of trailers, materials, and equipment within the facility yard while coordinating transportation routes to ensure efficient and timely deliveries. This role combines yard operations with transportation planning and serves as a key link between shipping, receiving, logistics, drivers, and operations teams. The successful candidate will support on-time customer delivery performance, optimize transportation resources, and maintain a safe and organized yard environment.

Job Description
Key Accountabilities

1. Yard and Shunt Operations

  • Safely operate a shunt truck to move trailers, containers, and equipment throughout the facility yard.
  • Position trailers at loading and unloading docks according to shipping and receiving schedules.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard equipment.
  • Monitor yard inventory and trailer locations to ensure efficient utilization.
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and accessible yard environment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, transportation regulations, and site procedures.
  • Report equipment defects, safety concerns, and operational issues promptly.

2. Route Planning and Dispatch Coordination

  • Develop and coordinate daily delivery routes to maximize efficiency and customer service.
  • Schedule deliveries and pickups based on customer requirements, load availability, and driver schedules.
  • Optimize routes to minimize mileage, fuel consumption, and transportation costs.
  • Coordinate transportation activities with drivers, warehouse teams, operations, and customers.
  • Monitor route performance and recommend improvements to service levels and productivity.
  • Adjust schedules and routes in response to changing customer requirements or operational challenges.

3. Logistics and Transportation Support

  • Ensure delivery schedules align with production, inventory, and customer requirements.
  • Maintain accurate transportation records, delivery manifests, and shipping documentation.
  • Track delivery status and communicate delays, risks, or issues to stakeholders.
  • Support carrier management and coordination when third-party transportation providers are utilized.
  • Assist in resolving transportation, delivery, and customer service issues.

4. Safety and Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with all transportation, yard, and workplace safety standards.
  • Conduct regular equipment inspections and ensure required documentation is completed accurately.
  • Support transportation and logistics audits when required.
  • Promote safe work practices among drivers, contractors, and yard personnel.
  • Participate in safety meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.

5. Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve route efficiency, service performance, and cost management.
  • Recommend improvements to yard flow, trailer utilization, and transportation processes.
  • Utilize transportation management systems, ERP tools, and data analysis to support decision‑making.
  • Support initiatives that improve on‑time delivery performance and operational effectiveness.

Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Computer Literate
  • Previous experience as a Shunt Driver, Yard Driver, Transportation Coordinator, Dispatcher, or Route Planner preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial distribution, logistics, or transportation environments is an asset.
  • Valid driver's license; AZ/Class 1 license considered an asset where applicable.
  • Experience operating yard trucks, shunt trucks, or tractor‑trailers.
  • Knowledge of transportation regulations, routing practices, and delivery scheduling.
  • Familiarity with ERP, transportation management, or fleet management systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and manage multiple priorities.

Hiring Range: $22.00 - $23.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
